Hey Folks,

I'm new here, and new to readers in general. I don't have one yet, but I've settled on Sony's 505, when the cash becomes available... I had Kindle 2 Fever up until a couple weeks ago when Amazon pulled the books without warning.

The news of new models from Sony is exciting, but disappointing to me. I was hoping to see a next-gen 505 model, but neither of these seem like a good candidate for that.

The 300 seems like it could be a really great starter, but I'm put off by it's lack of memory slot and it's size. I like the idea of being able to expand when I want, I think the 6" screen is a solid idea.

Unless the 600's screen is capacitive touch, like the iPhone, it's not something I want. When I was playing around with the 700 at my local Sony Style store, I found the effort involved was more than I wanted (I'm spoiled by my iPhone really.) I'd prefer buttons...

I want to echo yvanleterrible's remarks in that I would like buttons on the back of the device, it seems like it makes more sense. While I was playing with the 505, I found that I wished I had something on the back to hold it with. Bracing between the brace of my thumb and the bulging security connector, I found was more comfortable to hold than just the thin profile of the reader (It's tough to test such when that big security lock is there anyway)

Anyway, The high point of this news for me is that it means when these things come out I can (hopefully) pick up a 505 on the cheap.

I'll check out the 600 because I could use annotations (and I don't like the Brother P-touch label maker look of the Kindle). If they've improved the screen over the 700, it could be a winner for me.

The 300 could make nice gifts for my friends who are new to e-readers. I think Sony knows what they're doing here.

Welcome to the forums. I think you'll really like your 505 when you get it. If you get the M-Edge Executive cover for your reader, you can fold the cover back, tuck in the flap, and basically wear it on your hand like a glove (there's about a 1/2" opening when you fold it back). When holding/wearing mine like that, I find that my thumb naturally rests right on the bottom page turn button. IMHO, the two sets of page turn buttons on the 505 are both perfectly located.

The kc135 was never released as 717. 717 was an strictly an internal designation for the kc135. it was never called the 717 when released.

Yes, that is what I meant but probably did not say well enough. However, it accounts for the 717 in the chronological sequence and allow that later on the number was reused.

I thought that was the 707, not the 717? KC-135 Tanker, no? Also used for EWACS and other special projects.

Check your monitor - it appears the same to me as the Sangria Red 505 which is a lovely color.

But it's also going to be in silver or black if you don't like the red.

The 707 and 717 were derived from the 367-80—popularly known as the “Dash 80.”
The 707, the world’s first successful commercial jet; and the Model 717, the world’s
first production jet tanker—better known as the KC-135 (717 was also used as
the product designation for the MD-95 after the Boeing–McDonnell Douglas merger).

I hope they release the 300 at a sub $200 price point - it will certainly get the market going. 440 MB should be more than enough for an entry-lever reader. Although I have my whole library on a 4GB card, I tend to put the books I'm actively interested in on my internal memory and keep the card out to reduce processing and formatting time.

I'll take a look at the 600 when it's available, but I have to say I wasn't too thrilled with the touch screen on the 700. Even discounting the poor contrast - mainly as a result of the light wedge - I found the touch screen didn't work very well for me. I must have low capacitance or something. The page change buttons were OK for my usually left handed hold, but the screen wipe to change was useless one handed. I prefer the 505's left side page turn button.

Of course, what I really liked was the REB1150/1100 big ergonomic page turn buttons.

Yes, the old dash 80. I loved the Boeing livery on that one.

I'm not sure the Boeing's screens read any DRM'd formats. That's an awfully expensive device for non-secure ebooks only. I don't think they have a dedicated ebook store, either. I wonder if they're hoping people will confuse them with the Jetbook.

So am I correct in understanding that the 700 is being replaced by the 717?

I see the weekend Fry's Electronic ad shows the PRS-505 for $239, one per customer. Wonder if they'll really blow them out soon?
