My Kindle DX vs. Kindle 2 experience.

I got the DX when it was released and I got the K2 today.

1. Amount you can fit on the screen - DX wins.
2. Portability - K2 wins
3. TTS - K2 wins

I realized I wasn't using the DX because of the size. I took it to the gym a couple of times and it was horrible.

Got the K2 today and I'm in love. It is absolutely awesome. It is absolutely portable. And I can live with the smaller screen.

PDF support was hit or miss with the DX. Sometimes the lettering was too small.

For me personally the K2 wins.

Good for you that you made your choice based on personal use. Emphasis on "your choice". Smart Gator.

After having a DX for a day now I'm inclined to agree. It's a great device and I think I like reading it around the house and using it to display pdfs I refer to often. I don't see it being very comfortable for travel.

The choice is a very personal one that depends on reading preferences. I previously had and loved a PRS505. I preferred it to the Kindle 2 because of portability and the noticeably better screen contrast. Then I got the Kindle DX and fell in love all over again. The larger screen gives me a real book feel when I am reading. I can get some real thoughts off the page before flipping. Furthermore, my experience with PDFs has been 90 positive on the DX (better than on the PRS505 where my experience with PDF was maybe 75 positive.)
In so far as portability, I take my DX everywhere. It is heavier, especially with the cover, but I'm a strong boy so I can handle that. I normally just carry it in my hand or briefcase. While touring, I got a carry bag with a long shoulder strap so I can carry it around my shoulder when walking around which leaves my hands free for the camera. When I find a nice spot to read, I turn on that big page and wow, I'm home.
There are a lot of very happy Kindle 2 and PRS505 users who would never give up the portability. For me DX is da bomb. As long as we are growing the market for e-books--its all good.

I'm a little confused as to why you would rate TTS better on the K2. The sound on the DX is considerably louder and richer than on the K2 and the TTS software is identical.

I didn't think the DX had TTS, I couldn't find it in the options and I found it right away (same book I believe) in the K2.

And hey! I know you from Kindle Korner

And I thought that people buying a READING device would at least read that device's user manual, silly me

I think that the TTS is just a neat gimmick... I like to read vice having the Kindle read to me If I wanted to listen to the books I would download audio books.

While it may be too big for hauling around for a day, when you get it deployed in a safe place you are a reading station.

TTS wasn't a major selling point for me either.

I still prefer the DX, but my reading habits are probably different to yours. I usually read - in a chair on the porch or in bed. Both of those places it's easy to use two hands to control it.

But yeah for the gym and on the bike I always go for iPhone audiobooks.

Wasn't that important to me, after trying it out that one time on the K2 I haven't touched it since

Still loving my K2.

Yup, it's on the DX too, via the Aa (font) button.

Good to see ya here too! ( I wanted to include one of those little smilie things but they always show up as the link text...)
