You could have a point there, Andybaby. In any case, the dust spots don't bother me as much. If it gets to be unbearable before the year warranty is up, then I'll send it to Sony.

My new PRS700 replacement has dust spots right out of the box. Only three, one medium bright one and two dim ones, all at the bottom centre of the screen. Again, only noticeable when reading in the dark with the sidelights on. Reading in the daylight there is no problem.

I'm disappointed, but willing to live with these few since they are in a place that isn't too distracting and since there are only three. Hopefully they won't multiply. I plan on keeping this one unless there is some kind of recall or trade-in on a newer model.

SOny really has to get some quality control going here. How much would it take to put someone in a dark room and test these out before they ship them out.

WDE.

I realize this is a very old post, but I thought I might be able to offer something. I had this exact same problem with my Blackberry Curve and it seems to differ whether they think this falls under the warranty. I tried endlessly to get T-mobile to fix it, but they vehemently claimed that dust under the screen was not their fault. I finally took it back to Car Toys where I had to pull some teeth to get it exchanged.

But it hasn't been a problem whatsoever on my new phone, which leads me to believe it was a faulty seal. No idea if the same applies to the PRS-700s, but there's at least some hope that this isn't just a flawed design.

That sucks. The quality control on that reader has really turned me off of Sony. I don't think they are the same high quality brand they once were. Oh well good luck and i hope you don't get any more dust.

What does this mean? I don't know, but somehow a simple cleaning turned into a repair. I'm still hoping for the best, and it looks now as if I won't get it back for another week.

Jeez, what kind of repair depot doesn't have parts in stock?

Possibly because they haven't had to repair any PRS700's before, or at least haven't had to replace any screens before.

Sorry to hear about your continuing issues with dust spots, WDE. Your experience has actually put me off from taking my 700 in for maintenance. What's the point of giving up my reader for weeks and not even getting the problem resolved? Oh well, I've kind of gotten used to the dust spots so unless they multiply like crazy I guess I'll leave well enough alone.

This is so sad that you have "to live" with such an inconvenience, especially when so much money was invested! I can see where people can be put off from getting the 700

I noticed that Sony is once again shipping the 700's does this mean they "might" have been working on this problem???

Is there no valid way of cleaning this without completely disassembling the reader?

Not that I am aware of. Even the Sony repair shop replaced my whole unit rather than try taking it apart and cleaning it.
