Sony will probably re-enable the "docs.sony.com/release/smd" sometime-as these are used for downloading service manuals in their password protected Reference Library site.

This is probably a really good time to buy the 505. Sony will still support them and you can even buy an extended warranty if you think you might need it. It's still a really good reader! |

time to buy already
Well, the original stone-age PRS-500 is still kickin' and still my favorite toy. But, as scheduled, the 2-gig SD card is about full, so it's time for a new one.
You may debate the whys of having 2 gigs worth on one reader, but all the Shadow, all Doc Savage, lots of 19 century stuff, etc., begins to add up. Plus, the trend toward larger file sizes seems to be continuing. Why, I remember back when, when even covers didn't contain illustrations! I'm reeeally looking forward to faster, better everything, and glad to see Sony staying in the game. It began to look as though they saw the imminent ubiquity of readers (like cell phones in 1990) and decided not to play any more, but hopefully they can continue to innovate in this particular field and make a nice profit. |

thank you! It seems like you guys have a fantastic community here =)
Thanks guys, maybe I don't need to return it after all... The only thing that would encourage me to return the 505 and wait for these newer models would be the price. I paid £149 which seems very reasonable, but if a significantly cheaper alternative is going to become available it might be worth me getting that... |

I like keeping my books on my computer and transferring them to my device only when I'm about to read them. And I've heard you can turn wi-fi off if they build in that option so it wouldn't be a drain of batteries unless you constantly have it on. I don't see it using my power if you flip it on for a few seconds to download a book, but I could be wrong. I know some people don't care much about wi-fi, but I like not always having to have all these cables around to just plug something in to transfer files. |

I just want to point out, Sony's business model has always been to charge a premium to own the Sony brand. I'd be surprised to see this priced below $200. I'm guessing it will be $250.

I think you might be correct. Given The rabid speculation here, Sony may have felt a "leak" might be in order.
I am actually relieved to see the leak. I adore the Sony readers and would hate to see them leave business. That said these particular devices (not knowing the specifics) don't interest me, other than possible replacements. I am still waiting for a large screen offering or a truly advanced screen substrate. Just glad Sony is still in the game. |

I bought my 505 in March, and looking over the specs on the 300 and the 600, as things stand now, I'd still choose the 505. It's not perfect, but I don't think any of the ebook readers out there are yet. Maybe the next gen of screens will bring them up to par, but for now, I love my 505 and wouldn't trade it for anything out now or that I've seen coming out in the near future. |
