Wireless power transmission
This system for "wirelessly" powering and charging devices strikes me as having huge potential for all sorts of things:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8165928.stm I really hope that it proves to be commercially viable. |

Wait, wireless electricity is a joke!
It would be awesome if it were commercially viable. I'd love to be able to vacuum the house without having to plug the cable in another socket. Or putting my computer anywhere, without having to think about whether I can find a socket close by... |

i would love a system like that. my flat is rather old and i have a severe lack of outlets. so i have to use extension cords and multi-plug addons everywhere. and the bajillion power cords behind my computer are a dust trap and a real annoyance to keep sorted, and difficult to clean around ; it would be brilliant to get rid of them altogether. and think of the ecological benefits as we reduced manufacture and consumption of the power cords and also disposable batteries.
thinking on a larger scale, if they could adapt this technology to long distances, it would be a revolution for remote areas which have trouble getting infrastructure because the cost of dragging the power grid out there is too high to be justified by the relatively small populations it would benefit. even more so for developping countries. and it would mean also, no more power outages to thousands of homes after a bad storm, which may take days to resolve, during which people have potentially no heat, no light, no way to cook... i hope we see this sytem implemented really soon, on a large scale. |

I used an extensible spring-mounted shower curtain bar which I attached to the back side of the desk, between the side panels. Then I rolled the power cords and fastened them to the bar, leaving just enough length for them to reach the desired spot. I did the same for USB cables. The floor was clear and I could extend my legs freely under the desk without risking to experience a flying keyboard or mouse. I'm not using the same desk in the new appartment, and I've been very lazy so I haven't done it again. Also, knowing that the current desk will change hasn't been helping the natural laziness. |

Unlike the conversion of broadcast radio energy, which is dismally inefficient, the efficiency of what is being considered here would have to be fairly high. Does anyone here know what it would be and what makes it different?
