Anyone having any problem with quote marks? I have 25 books on the Sony now which on preview looked good (Had to convert to HTML, then ePub, then back to LRF to get the justification working). But in about a dozen of my books, the quotation marks and apostrophes seem to have gotten lost in translation. In the HTML they are showing up as placeholders (i.e. not as text but with a mark like you would get in Word if you turned on the show marks command) and in the ebook they are simply missing. I thought at first it might be certain publishers, but I have some from a publisher where one book will be fine and one won't be. Are these books simply not going to be convertable? Or do you have any ideas for how to make them readable again short of reading them on a computer and manually adding in every quote mark?

Are you converting to LRF and/or ePub in Calibre? You have to enter the "source encoding" under "Look & Feel"...so far, cp1252 has worked for me. I noticed this was generally necessary from (originally) eReader books, not from Mobipocket ones.

So I guess I will have to bite the bullet and download Book Designer? This will be a huge inconvenience because I will have to run it on a netbook(which I don't often keep at home) and transfer files back and forth using a flash drive. So I was really REALLY oping for a solution which only requires Calibre, but nobody is replying...
So IS there a way to fix my books using JUST Calibre? What setting am I overlooking? What am I doing wrong? I have found on the Sony Reader that even files which looked fine on my Mac in Calibre are having errors on the Reader---even the ones without the quotation issue are missing em-dashes and the like. But most importantly I am baffled as to why something will be visible in the reader on Calibre and then not be there wen transferred to the Sony. I just want to set this up so I can read my existing bought and paid for books! I won't be buying secure ones in the future thanks to all these headaches, but I have about 45 of them from the past that I really want to be able to use. I have used the decoder tool successfully but now need to get the resulting files in readable condition---preferably using JUST the mac and Calibre. Can't anybody help me, please? |

How does the ePub look using Adobe Digital Editions on the Mac? This will tell you if the problem is generic to ADE or specific to ADE on the Sony.
This does not appear to be missing characters in the Sony font, because I don't think this would produce A with an umlaut. It sounds more like a mis-identified encoding, e.g. the HTML from ereader2html identifies itself as (say) cp1252 when it fact it is (say) utf-8. Assuming for the moment that the problem isn't just a mis-identified encoding, I think what you need is a file type plugin that converts a table of "bad" characters (or strings) to a set of "good" characters. See Customizing calibre. There are lots of potential uses for such a plugin (many of them mis-uses), but I am not aware of anyone producing one. |

Interesting point, Wallcraft! I previewed the epub file in Stanza and it looked absolutely perfect. So if I export if from Stanza as RTF or PDF or something, will that display okay on the Sony Reader?

Just found a bug with ereader2html.pl. The tool does not seem to export footnotes.

Quote:
The "eReader version" is the 1st two bytes of PDB record 0, eReader header (wiki: EReader), but unfortunately 259 isn't a known type. |
