I've done a little more research on Windows Embedded 6.0. As a software developer it has a special interest for me. It seems the above links lead to the trial version of the SDK which runs on Visual Studio 2005 (only). This SDK allows developers (and device manufacturers) to compile an image for WinCE 6.0. There is quite a bit more to it, as far as packaging drivers and all kinds of settings. It also has an emulator so image testing can be done from Visual Studio. You can compile to many different device types (ARM, MIPS, INTEL and others). Device manufacturers can then sell the image legally (provided they own the SDK) for their device and usually add the price or more (like anywhere from $3 to $10 more) for each license (1 per device).

So they compile an image with the features they want, plus any drivers needed for their device, and any settings needed for the OS during boot in a registry file. I would love to mess around with the trial SDK, but I've already upgraded my Visual Studio to the 2008 version for some other projects I'm working on.

One thing I notice about the Linux OS (even 4.0) on the SmartQ 7, is that it is slow - especially reaction time like clicking to launch applications. For many reasons, especially for ease of use, I think it would be very wise to include WinCE with this device. I know a lot of us like working with these OS and customizing things, but for the device to truly adapt to a market of newbies like an iPhone would, it needs to be as easy to use a possible. The guys on the Mer project have that idea down and it will be a much better OS for this device when it is complete. On the other hand, I don't think Mobipocket or MS Reader will work on Mer and therefor many DRM'ed ebooks will be closed off to folks who need to be able to use them.

So now you know why some of us want WinCE on the device so badly. Nate covers WinCE and ebook reading software very well over in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32551

Regards,
Cold

At the time, I was looking at the Always Innovating Touch Book, which would be great except it runs linux and the company has no interest in releasing a windows o/s for it, as far as I can tell from their rant about "We don't really do Windows" on their site. They do say that Windows 7 is a possibility, but it sounds like it'd be in the distant future.

However, after doing some experimenting, I got both MS Reader and Mobipocket Reader to work in WINE - so I guess that opens up devices with Linux as possibilities again.
I wouldn't count on WINE for non x86 devices, as far as I know WINE for WinCE never got past the initial prototyping stage. Doing an x86 emulation + WINE to run regular windows apps would be too slow for a good experience (even using Transitives dynamic jit style tech). The Cortex A8 is an inorder 13 stage pipeline, without the hardware acceleration you can think of it roughly in the same class as a 600 Mhz Pentium 1 or Atom.

The Touch Book is an arm device and I think that more than anything is why the say they don't do Windows. The best they could do right now is WinCE which isn't what most people are looking for in a netbook.

Wermy - its a try and see type of situation. Some do and some don't.

I've got my license file for WinCE now from SmartDevices. I'm just waiting on the English version of WinCE. Hopefully they don't forget those of us who need it!

Nation,

I just went here: http://www.smartdevices.com.cn/search/ and put in my serial number and the code on that page. You are the one who showed me how to register - so I'm guessing you already have. They processed a bunch of WinCE registrations and released them today, so maybe yours is ready too. If you don't get an error message screen, you will see the screen where you can download your license file. As you already know, don't use it on the Chinese version or you could be stuck with it before the English version is released.

Thanks for the tip, but it's too small. I'd like a 7" device if at all possible.
I know, I know, I'm impossible to please .

7"or larger device running WinCE (so I can run MS Reader and Mobipocket. Without those, no deal). Preferably under 600.00 USD, but so far I'm coming up light on that except for the JE100 by Jointech. I'm waiting to see how Sweetpea fares with that. WiFi, SD card capability, portrait mode capability, and preferably sturdy enough so it doesn't break in a week. (or a month, or a year...).

LOL so I see! Very nice specs, if only that screen were an inch or two bigger! I may have to settle - or wait til someone builds my "dream device".

Mine is H901034715*** - so it appears a bit older. I ordered mine the same day Chippy (from UMPCPortal.com) posted his video review. I was getting that exact message for the last week even though I submitted my registration a week ago. I went to the SmartQ Chinese fan message board and did some translating. I noticed they released a batch of these licenses today according to the users on the board.

Anyone who's downloaded the Chinese version of CE and who wants English should check here. If those files don't work, there's a link there that show's how to translate the gui files pretty easily.
