I am whizzing my way through "The Collectors" by Baldacci. It is the follow on to the "Camel Club". I am really enjoying it so far. The Camel Club was my first Baldacci book and I really like his writing style and characters.

A lot of recommendations for Baldacci but I haven't tried him yet.

I'm reading "Mirage" by Nina Burleigh - the account of Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 that discovered the Rosetta Stone, but lost the war. Fascinating account of the hundreds of academics, scientists & students he took to Egypt, and then abandoned there. I'm a bit disappointed by the quality of the photos - on the DX - when zoomed up to full page they tend to pixelate - but then, this wasn't a "DX Enhanced" book.

"The keys of Egypt" by Lesley & Roy Adkins which details Champollion's decoding of hieroglyphs is a great follow-on. Don't know if that's available in ebook - I bought the pbook a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the info - it's still in pbook - but looks to be a perfect next read!

TV or film can be subtle and suggest things rather than shove them in your face too. 'Alien' (the first one) was one of the scariest movies I saw, and you hardly saw anything of the monster. It's much more effective when you are scaring yourself in fact

oh yes, i completely agree ! and it's true, tv or film can be subtle, i don't disagree. but nonetheless it's a different rapport to the media ; even when it's subtle, it's still visual, so you have a whole dimension which is already "decided" for you, rather than created in your head.

Now I'm reading "The Alchemyst," by Michael Scott. The freebie from a while ago.

Have just finished it. Obviously aimed at a younger audience than me, but not a bad read all the same.

I have to say I was disappointed with the ending which left too many things in the air I guess as a come on to buy the next book in the series which I may or may not buy.

When she read it, her eyes were open, which is lucky because reading is bloody difficult otherwise.

I hope this has been of some help, Alphapheemail.

[THUMP!]

OW! Okay, I deserved that, but was the rail spike through the end of the bat really necessary?

Also, I'm reading (still, having re-started after a couple of false starts) Saul Bellow's Collected Stories. Don't let my false starts put you off. The writing is superb. I've just had trouble reading for quite some time now, for reasons unknown. (As an audience member, can you get the parallel, "Reader's Block", to writers' "Writer's Block"? )

Reading aloud for ten minutes or so often helps me over 'reader's block'.

Bit embarrassing on the bus though.
