meat starts you on a foundation of cholesterol and heterocyclic amines , one causes heart disease/stroke and the other cancer, there you have the three biggest causes of death in the developed world, a vegan diet has a cholesterol intake of zero as cholesterol is only produced in animal cells.
Heterocyclic amines initiate cancer and promote its growth and are created by combining protein in cooking with creatine , creatine is produced in muscle so once again is present in animal products.

as for iron, yes lots of teen girls who go veg worry their doctors, but usually when they go veg they maintain the same standard western diet with cheese and eggs in place of the meat they omit - a well planned veg diet of any kind can have yield great iron levels.

look at vegan communities like dimona in israel and you will see virtually zero incidence of heart disease or cancer.

EUCH!! And it's not because I'm vegetarian - I'm not - I just try to eat good quality real food, rather than "food products". Actually, I am slowly becoming a vegetarian because it's really hard to find good quality meat. Most of it is too bland, too boring, and just plain not worth my money or cooking time.

On my recent vacation on Iceland I had lamb and horse meat that was über first class... I just can't get this at home - so I make do with vegetables. Good thing for me I like veggies too

May I introduce Michael Pollan - and his great book "In Defense of Food"? The single most sensible down-to-earth writing about food and eating that I've read in years. Can you suggest why exactly we are eating so much crap food as we are? We even feed it to the animals we eat (it's a double up).

That just makes it worse.

Edit: The Swedish flag on the ketchup bottle puzzled me... I mean, as a Dane, I know the Swedes are capable of anything, but this...?

Ikea bacon. You have to assemble it yourself. Squirt the bottle content on a plate and let dry for 2 hours for a crispy bacon. 1 1/2 hour if you wear dentures.

i've been a vegetarian since early 1994. i don't buy leather and do my best not to buy products that animal test.

i used to be vegan, but developed an allergy to wheat, of all silly things, which made things complicated. i mostly eat cage free eggs and try to drink milk from farms that treat the animals well - horizon lets them wander around and do cow things, btw.

i'm a big fan of quorn. i love their vegetarian roast! my husband eats a lot of burgers from both morningstar farms and boca, and my non-veg relatives love morningstar farms veggie sausages and riblets.

btw, yves has a great canadian bacon my non veg friends love to fry up, and i like fakin' bacon, although i admit it isn't that close to real bacon. still makes a wicked blt, though
