I would take it as a signal that we are finally arriving at the maturity of ebooks, when we can get something of Isaac Asimov's non fiction science books. As an example I would love to see Quasar, Quasar, Burning Bright available as an ebook.

And for a real challenge: Asimov's Biographical Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, 3D Ed

Now that would be a good sign!

All of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe books (4 are available, but hard to find).
Dashiell Hammett - The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man
Erle Stanley Gardner - all of the Perry Mason books
Watership Down

And of course, all of the Harry Potter books.

There are so many ebooks that I want that it's hard to pick just one. Actually, quite a few of my old favorites are already in ebooks since I read a lot of SF, especially Baen SF. Now that Tolkien's major books are available, the Harry Potter books is up there. There are also several older books, or more obscure books that I would like - Pratt & DeCamp's Complete Enchanter stories, Brian Dailey's books, some early Larry Bond and Harold Coyle books.

One feature that I am surprised that Amazon hasn't implemented is an author wish list. Just let me know anytime a new books by any author by this name comes out. I would wager that they would increase sales by a significant percentage.

Daithi mentioned "The Nine Taylors". I'd actually like to have all of the Dorothy Sayers "Lord Peter Wimsey" books for Kindle. "Whose Body" and "Clouds of Witness" are available, but not the rest.

Also, all of Robert Heinlein would be nice.

Yes, they changed the title and edited the text to "Americanize", not only in spelling but one or two idioms.

But only on the first books, as far as I know.

Bertrand Russell's 'History of Western Philosophy'.

A non-fiction book that would work well on an ereader (no diagrams or maps).
A great read - fascinating and educational. Also, a book that you can dip in and out of, so would be great to have permanently loaded.

I'm tempted, but they aren't cheap and it's a shot in the dark hoping the formatting is ok and it's been properly proofed - but it's such a great book.

Off for a dither.

That's only how I knew it existed in non-freebie form (not that I'm tight or anything ).

The Mobipocket link has a sample in their format, though I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. To be honest, as it's something I think I'd find to be a permanent "reference" after reading it - something I would want sitting in the Billys - I'll probably buy it in pbook form first anyway.

Got it! Formatting looks fine.
I have the same pback edition - but it's a bit bulky for lugging about. Considering it's a book for life, not just a one-off read, I think I can justify the expense.

me too. i bought "The Case of the Gilded Fly" (it's the first Gervase Fen mystery, i thought i'd read them in order) based on one review alone : it said Edmund Crispin was the heir to John Dickson Carr and Groucho Marx, and i thought "now there is an author i will love." but to be honest i'm having a hard time getting through it because... it's in paper.

oh, two more of my favourites !!! i'll second those. particularly as my paperback of "the thin man" is in a lamentable state. and probably older than i am. and all those dusty old ES Gardner (and AA Fair, let's not forget him !) paperbacks are taking up a LOT of space on my shelves !

Dorothy Sayers is in the public domain in Australia now, I'm rather surprised the rest of her books haven't popped up on PG Australia yet. we've got "Strong Poison" and a couple of short stories here as well, for those of you in Life+50 countries.

my own list, besides those above, would include tons of french authors, like Fred Vargas, Boris Vian, Raymond Queneau, Léo Malet, Muriel Barbery, and also authors like Alessandro Baricco ("Novecento, pianiste", "les châteaux de la colère", "City"... all of them, really. in french please), Tonino Benacquista, Ionesco...

there are plenty more but i'll stop there so as not to depress myself any further.

I did the same with Clive James' Cultural Amnesia - I bought both (and I should give Clive and his publishers a bit of kudos for going DRM-free).

I've got Bertrand Russell's on my shortlist of pbooks to buy next time I'm in Brisbane. I haven't even one-off read it yet, but it's a TBR queue-jumper.

I just bought History of Western Philosophy about a week ago on Amazon, but haven't started reading it yet. It's not too bad pricewise on Amazon either $15.
