Well, arguably dancer is the dark is his worst film. Actually I'm not that fond of his Goldluck-trilogy (breaking, dancer and the Idiots) at all.

the week before that i had seen "breaking the waves" on the tv (arte was doing a lars von trier cycle) and it had nearly done me in already. i would never have gone to see dancer if a friend hadn't dragged me there, but that was it for me. i have made a solemn vow never ever ever under any pretext to inflict such punishment on myself again. also, if i'm ever standing next to that man in the street, i fully intend to push him under a bus unless he promises to stay the hell away from cameras and scripts in future.

I only ever watched one Lars Von Trier film, Dancer in the Dark, and by watch, I mean stare incredulously at the screen for about half an hour before walking out. I admire his approach and his willingness to experiment, but I'm severely underwhelmed by the end product.

Now if we were talking Jim Jarmusch or Hal Hartley....

the former. despite all the hype, i really don't think von trier is all that profound or subversive. i think he's basically just a sociopath with deep misogynistic tendencies who has found a questionably "artistic" substitute for the actual torture he wishes he could inflict on real people directly without any intermediary.

That review is a pretentious trash, the reviewer projects his own opinions and views onto that movie and thinks that if the movie's not in line with his own personal philosophy, it naturally has to be bad.
It's a controverial peace of cinematography, there's no denying it, it has some violent scenes, it's shocking. But for me it's a masterpiece. And having seen it, the review just made me laugh and think about the ignorance spreading throughout the world.

I loved that film. Unlike his other works. But Bjork might have had something to do with that. The music to Dancer in the Dark was just stunning. So I admit I might be biased.

Well, I may agree that he's probably not that profound or subversive. But I don't think that's where he shines either. That's all a part of the content of his films, which I rarely find interesting. For me he is using the film media as material, and twisting it to see what he/it can do. There's no authenticity in his films imho. Just examinations of the media itself and not least its relation to the viewer.
