What kind of car do you drive? - Page 11

Let's see, first car was an MGB that I rebuilt after someone disassembled it and never could get it back together. Today its a Honda Accord 4 cylinder. Around here it is more power than I need and also works great in the mountains in the western part of the state.

The police use this car a lot here in Mexico. This car has a somewhat aggressive look that suits its function well, but I rather see my money tax spent on something less expensive.

Car is a Ford Contour. Very reliable and great mileage.

We also are in the market for a second car. I hesitate between a Jeep Cherokee, or a sedan. A Cherokee would be useful for the rough road here in Mexico, especially when going out of the city, but a sedan would have far better mileage.

We have no salt corrosion issue here, the last time it snowed it must have been like 15 years ago. But driving can still be fun :

My car is a four-door '07 Honda Civic SI. Initially looks like I'm being frugal and conscientious but it's a blast to get around in!

The wife (and consequentially me sometimes) drives a Chevy HHR.

Diesel cars to tend to be a bit pricier though and the diesel is dearer. The price of diesel is actually getting to the point where it's the same over here in the UK. In the few towns around where I live diesel was actually cheaper than petrol for a while. Now it's back to being exactly the same price!

How weird...

The car is more expensive, taxes are more expensive (both because it's a diesel and because diesels are generally heavier than their petrol brothers), but the fuel is way cheaper... The prices this morning:

€1.407 per liter for euro95
€1.039 per liter for diesel
€0.573 per liter for LPG

As you know, fuel prices are almost entirely tax. It sounds as if in your country, there's lower tax on diesel than petrol, which isn't the case in the UK (other than so-called "red diesel", which can only be used by farmers). In my local garage at the moment, petrol is £1.02 a litre, diesel is £1.15 a litre.

There's only a penny between petrol and diesel where I am - £1.04 for petrol and £1.05 for diesel.

Unfortunately I don't know any farmers

Tax on 1-1-2009
€0.706 on petrol
€0.4185 on diesel
€0,13137 on LPG.

Red Diesel (which we also have and doesn't have the fuel tax) leaves a red fuel tank. If you get caught using it in a regular car, you can pay all the missing taxes and a huge fine...

in all seriousness I abandoned a 99 Suburban last fall after the transmission went out for the THIRD time! I was in a hurry and bought a '98 Windstar. it's ok and gets me around but I wasn't paying attention to the fact that the back windows do not open. that's pretty much a must when I have the dog with me in this weather so she does not get to ride around as much as she used to. back at home I have been restoring a 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser that had sat in a pasture for almost 10 years. it's up and running, licensed even. I did ski season with it, but didn't think it would make the drive here. it still needs work and is horrid in heavy traffic. I'm thinkink of picking up a 450cc something for the commute.

I hate automatics and really enjoy driving a manual transmission. my Suburban was my first automatic.
