C'mon up to La Crosse! The pool temp yesterday afternoon was 77 F. A little nippy, but not too bad after a while.

Where I live it's currently 103F with humidity at 34 percent, feels like 116F, and it's only 1:00 pm. It'll be another 4 hours before the temperature reaches its high point of the day.

Yep, 82F sounds pretty darn good. Can almost feel the chill in the air from here.

Yet, two summers ago, it was excruciatingly hot here and the rain was almost non-existent.

I don't have enough information to understand the truth behind global warming , but the differences that occur in the weather from year to year are very interesting to me.
It's one reason that I really prefer the term Global Climate Disruption rather than Global Warming. The jet stream is being pushed out of its normal track (for one thing) or what we consider to be the normal track. That is making for some seriously strange weather. There are a lot of other factors, and I don't want to over simplify it, but if you look at the graphs of the average temperature over the past few thousand years, you can see we are in deep caca.

I'm also sitting in one of the areas that has had next to no rain (the lakes are lowering at about 1 foot each month) and where the temp has averaged about 100 for the past month. Everyone here has taken to putting out water for the wildlife because the streams that normally flow are all dried up. It's just an oven here.

I'm frustrated ... I just got the new flat ("residential tenant walk-through" or something like that - the old resident, my companion, the landlord and I walked through the flat, we got the new keys, and yaddayadda.

Problem: The plan we got was wrong ... the sleeping room is smaller then showed on the plan, and a radiator is in a wrong position. Like in: Totally wrong position and those significant 20cm too small.
And the complete wood (ceiling, walls in the winter garden, doors, the stuff right above the floor at the wall) is ugly (didnt see this when we first had a look at the flat - my mistake for going late ..). I was really, really looking forward to the new flat and now I am totally depressed.
Oh and the same f***ing problem we had in our current bath .. the flags are much too low (meaning: if you shower, the wall with no tiles will get wet), some braindead monkey painted the windows w/o doing something against the mold which had grown on it (and it is now growing through the paint), etc

Okay, all of this can be handled, and we will have a nice flat as soon as we fixed all of this, and got some new wardrobe, and a new sink, and stuff - but we've both got no time, too much to do and we're missing this huge stash of money to employ someone to do it..
So we will be living in an ugly flat for some time. And you can see it (with enough light) the very first time you see the flat - because the door of the flat is sratched (not scratched like "paint above" but scratched like "scratched one or two cm deep into the wood around the handle, because some drunken idiot of pre-pre-inhabitant forgot his key and opened the door himself by removing the handle")

According to the weather folks (local), this particular heat wave has broken all of the records in the recorded history of Austin and the Hill Country. I found that shocking, but I certainly hope this doesn't go on for a couple of years. That would be truly awful.

i'm so sorry tirsales. i have similar problems with my current flat, and it's really frustrating and annoying. i hope you can manage to fix it up as soon as possible, taking care of the most obvious things first perhaps. i hope to make up for it at least the rent is not too high and the neighborhood is good and covenient.

The neighbourhood is really fine and the rent is okay (with regard to the average rent in Germany it is extremely high - but then Tübingen is one of the most expensive towns in Germany and in the local average the flat is cheap).
I think I will first take care of that thrice d*mned door (shortly after installing some lighting )

It must be a European vs. American sort of thing, but I have never lived in an apartment (flat) where the landlord didn't clean and paint (and sometimes re-carpet) the place before renting it out again. I always remember paying a rather hefty deposit to guarantee I would either leave the place in pristine condition, or offset the landlord's costs in making it that way before the next tenant took possession.

The night I moved out of my very last apartment, I had some black spray shoe dye in one box. The box was sort of a plastic milk case thing. Anyway, somehow the cap came off, and I put something on the spray bottle, and hear this pssssst sound, turned around and there was this long black spray mark on the nice beige carpet.

I spent the whole night getting that spot out .... but I did get it out, and the carpet looked perfect when I left. There are times that having a lot of practical chemistry in one's background is very helpful.

At least in Germany its normally your job to leave the flat painted (I'd have to paint my current flat, but the next inhabitant wants to paint the walls really colourful - so he wants me to not paint them now. Lucky me in this regard!)
The floor, doors, and stuff are the landlords job. I could sue them (the flat is owned by a large insurance company which lost a big streaming heap of money in the crisis) - but this could take years. I guess they would have to fix it all, but its not worth the trouble .. (it would be different if something was too broken to be used - e.g. a broken door).
So I guess I'll take my chances in talking them into fixing the front door (its in a really, really poor shape) and the winter garden, and I'll take care of the rest of the doors and the visible baseboards.
And yes, we pay a large deposit too (something like 3 month rent), and door and winter garden should have been fixed before - but somehow they didnt do it.

It's a room with one wall (into the house) and windows on the rest.
or .
"Mine" is of course smaller (~4m², roughly 4m high) (and of course the flat is in the 2nd (top) floor of the house).
Kind of a balkony with windows all around
The inside walls are covered with wood - and this wood hasn't been painted or attended since the house was build 1983...
