We might have difficult reading it off the boat. He should stick to just putting the boat's name on the boat. I think he really needs to come back and right it on here. Promptly, please. |

Howard Hughes was a very excited man. He was always that way, but today was especially exciting. He walked rapidly through the hallways at Hughes Aircraft and ignored all the secretaries trailing behind him with those annoying memos. If he picked up just omne, then he would be all day going over every one of them in excruciating detail. Then he'd have to wash his hands over and over and over... He shook his head and picked up the pace as distant cries of, "But Mr Hughes!" faded away behind him. Finally, he got to the hanger door and walked in to the "Experimental Aircraft" section. There it was... his latest invention. The Flying Boat sat on it's wheels in all it's glory. Twin engines. Cargo bay that converted to seating with just three hours of backbreaking labor. A big aluminum boat welded to the bottom to land on water. And of course the all knew electronics package that was going to revolutionize flying. He practically skipped with joy as he walked up to the mechanics who were putting the finishing touches on her. "Good morning, Randall! How are things progressing?" Randall, the only mechanic that Hughes had ever trusted with his aircraft, moved his lips as he tried to figure out the question. "Just fine, Mr Hughes." This was his stock answer most of the time. Randal couldn't stand college boys, but the pay here was good. "Is she all ready to take up on a trial flight?" "Certainly, Mr Hughes." Antoher stock answer that never failed. "And what about the Multi-Axial Reactive Vortex Inertial Navigator?" Now this Randall was sure of. "I really don't know about that one, Mr Hughes. It seems a bit... depressed." "Nonsense! How can electronic circuitry be depressed?" Hughes knew very well how flesh and blood circuitry could become depressed and he was damned well sure that the nav system in his new toy had never even met his mother. "It just seems that way, Mr Hughes." "Well, let's just hop up and take a look for ourselves, shall we?" Hughes always loved the thrill of getting into a new aircraft. The smell of leather, the fresh paint, the lack of cracks on the widshield, the absence altogether of any dust dust dust dust anywhere. He pinched his thumb painfully to stop that thought. "Good morning, Plane!" he shouted when he plopped himself into the pilot's seat. "I don't know what's so good about it. Just look at those cumulus clouds there in the west. It will be rain before lunch for certain. Not that I should care about lunch. Who is going to remember to feed the autopilot?" said M.A.R.V.I.N. Last edited by pshrynk; 09-25-2009 at 12:30 PM. |

Well -- maybe a punch line. It is also a direct parallel to the Pratchett book that I have temporarily misplaced (due to other hobbies intruding) and have thus forgotten the title of -- where the "pass-phrase" is said at the wrong place, due to the name being oh-so-close-but-not-quite-right. | |
