It pays to photocopy address books occasionally. Then you have a back-up if they get lost.

remarkable how many IT people I've know who rely on paper for their diary/contacts/ideas .....

Hmm ..... I'm sort of a back up fanatic. I must have five full backups of every computer I own.

Have you ever considered using Carbonite?? It's rather inexpensive, backs everything up, doesn't slow down the computer. Just a thought. I mean, I assume you put a lot of time and effort into those book covers.

I keep two address books (one in my bag, one at home) for that reason...

Yes, I know that's sad!

I'm going to go the exact opposite route and I'm investigating using the cloud for everything and reducing my reliance on HD's altogether. Eee are about to bring out a new keyboard/computer with 8gb/16gb SSD that I'm thinking of moving to. It has an Atom 1.6ghz processor, which isn't too great, but with my writing already in the cloud, the only other app I'll need to run on a regular basis is Photoshop or the Gimp. I can also store my PSD's in the cloud also. For movie playback, i'll just grab what I want when I want to watch it from .torrents, then delete afterwards. I think the days of physical ownership or even collections stored locally are drawing to a close.

I don't trust cloud storage (especially for my personal info) - I'd rather rely on my own local backups.

I thought my local backups were secure and working, but they weren't, so I really can't trust myself on that score. Besides all that, I want to reduce my whole computing footprint across the board, and strip it all right back to what I actually need. The all-in-one keyboard, or the new Asus eepc t91 are looking like good choices at the moment.

Love it I'm much happier now using Google Docs and Gears than I was writing in a word processor and syncing them with apps like Dropbox. Now I can access my writing wherever there's an internet connection, and use it offline on any computers I have gears installed upon.

Carbonite is cloud backup. Just FYI.

I do both. Local and cloud backups. Carbonite is very secure, very fast, and very cloud.

crikey, i hadn't heard about that computer-in-a-keyboard but it's mighty intriguing ! not sure i'm ready to go 100% cloud myself but when i look at the stacks of years-old cd / dvd backups of stuff that i probably will never need to access again (assuming it's not corrupt anyway) collecting dust around here i begin to think maybe i should...

Actually, those have been available for some years.

Although, once you add in the DVD player, a 750G HD, and a few other nice items, it's a bit more expensive than the Asus. Cybernet also makes an all in one built into a monitor, and has for several years.

hm. i wonder if they're available with azerty configuration ? (annoying detail, you can't see the prices online, you have to make your configuration and then register an account to receive a quote. seems like they could have automated that so you could see right away how much it might cost, and play with different configs...)
