Hi!
Hi,
I've been looking at the forums for a few weeks now but have never posted before, here or anywhere. I got a Sony 505 about a month ago and just love it. I've purchased from mainly from fictionwise with a few other sites here and there, can't remember the exact names. I took advantage of their 100% rebate special a few weeks ago and got quite a few books. I've already discovered Calibre to organize and convert my collection because I do like things to be organized. I'm going to the beach for two weeks in a few weeks and am getting my reading material ready. Last year I checked out about 50 books from the library and took along, this year will have much more room in the car since everything will be on my reader! I'm a huge Jane Austen fan and have all her books ready to read again plus quite a few l have gathered up from Austen fanfic sites over the years. I try to buy in DRM free multiformat if possible but have bought a few secure MS reader that I guess I'll have to convert if I want to read on the reader. I really don't like reading ebooks on the computer. As I understand it I can use ConvertLit for that. I don't mind paying a reasonable price for books I want but I do object to the whole DRM thing and so many formats that are incompatible with different readers. Didn't the world learn anything from the whole beta/vhs debacle? I have also bought a couple of secure e-reader books that fictionwise was offering a 100% rebate on. Can anyone recommend a way to convert those so I can load to my reader and if I do this again would it be better to get the secure mobi instead? I'm not technically proficient enough to have to actually code something and some of the posts I've read on how to do this are way over my head. Anyway, I think this site is great and I'm going to check out the books here too. I saw Little Dorrit on PBS back in the spring and think that might be another great beach book. I've never actually read any Dickens. Thanks for any help with the convert issues... |

Hello bookfanmd, and
I also have a 505 and really enjoy it. As far as your questions on conversions and such . . . I'm sure one of our more knowledgable members will be along shortly to help you out there. Congratulations on your new toy and enjoy your beach reading. |

Hi bookfanmd and welcome to MobileRead. Did you know you can borrow eBooks from many public libraries? You check them out and they stay on your reader for 21 days, at the end of which they disappear. Anyway, check out the list here on our Wiki https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/EBook_Lending_Libraries

It depends on the library. Some will allow anyone to borrow for a small annual fee. Others require you to be a resident. The Fairfax, VA library, for example, only loans to residents of Fairfax county plus neighboring counties and cities. Or at least thatw as the arrangement when I joined.

Welcome to MobileRead, bookfanmd!
There is a wonderful selection of books you can download here at MR. We can't really help you with the secure books that you've downloaded because you would have to strip the DRM (depending upon the format, of course) and that is illegal here in the US. I would suggest you use a search engine and ask your question. You will find links there that can help. Happy reading. |
