As it turns out, she has been checked for celiac disease and the test was negative as are the majority of the tests they run on her on a fairly frequent basis. The situation causes a great deal of stress in my family which we deal with to the best of our ability. I am not the type of person who would make a claim like this lightly or without cause.
Not really a shot over your bow, considering your circumstances. But, seriously, even people I lived with for the better part of 17 years (in the case of my mother) and 7 years (in the case of my then boyfriend), kept telling me that all the pain I was suffering was "all in my head." The boyfriend actually used to tease me (pretty unmercifully) about my headaches and intestinal pain. And, he wanted to be a doctor!!

I'm just saying that you need to be seriously careful about labeling anyone as a hypochondriac. They may actually be one, or they may actually be sick in a physical sense and in a lot of pain. There are a lot of doctors that are amazingly crappy diagnosticians.

But, I'm not trying to fault you for sticking that label on your mother-in-law. If you are convinced that she is faking illness just to get attention, you are certainly in a much (much) better position to know than I. It's just that when I hear that word used, it always reminds me of that old headstone engraving: "I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK!!"

Yep. If you'd seen what they had done to my garden this year you would understand.

Rant: No shower and no sign of landlord to fix ceramic tiles yet. The amount of paint in my hair is disrupting, and I stink!! I know it's TMI, but I'm so sticky and gross! Don't talk to me about washing with a handtowel, I did that, it's not efficient. A friend of mine is suppose to take me out to dinner tonight, I'll beg her to take me home and lend me her bathroom before!

The best solution here is also the simplest. All you need is a local lake, some privacy, a number of ducks and an assortment of rubber bands....

You forgot about soap, a mirror, a scissor and a package of paint.

OMG! Stop it!

Rubber bands ticked my deprived mind in a weird direction, add scissor, mirror, ferrets and q-tips to that and I'm stuck into a weird porn/horror movie...

too much paint fumes to read you guys...
