The capital of Portugal is Canberra. I know it's true, because a little squirrel told me.

You're all jealous I'm getting a DR1000S, that's what. (I know you're all joking, although when I've been in USA I've heard way worse questions & answers about Portugal's location. I was shocked! And I'm talking about educated people that should know better. )

When visiting California, I was seriously asked by an American university student if Birmingham (UK) was near Milan (Italy)!

I really don't know. I mean, it is taught sure... but there's just so many damn countries over there... Actually, many people over here can't even speak correctly. How can we expect them to know where the States are or what the capitals are in that case. Heck, a large percentage of people over here couldn't tell you who the (current) Vice President is, or Secretary of State or Speaker of the House. BOb

Many Europeans have little concept of the location of states and cities in the U.S. as I've seen. They generally know a few. The comparison I would give is to treat Europe's countries as states given the size of the U.S. and its states. I am repeatedly asked by friends from Europe (and other places) if PA is near such and such state. If we switched the titles to countries I guess I could sit and point my finger at those ignorant Europeans for not knowing where Indiana is... And no, no one is being that harsh, just using the statement for comparison. Though this topic usually degrades to something along those lines. BTW I didn't just make up what I said above, with the recent meetup in Virginia several friends, including mods, kept asking similar questions in regards to various users and their proximity to me. One of those silly Europeans thought me and nekokami were next door to one another... lol -MJ |
