I don't know for sure, but it looks like August sometime. RobertB is keeping all of us well informed on the Astak Thread. Besides the Epson controller with faster speed, it has 400 mhz processor, and as of last update it will hav TTS. All that plus folders and Astak's service in the US. There are a lot of us waiting to order just as soon as the site is up and running.

Based on price and number of supported formats the jetBook is very attractive. It looks like a nice device. On the other hand e-ink is the major thing that drew me towards dedicated ebook readers.

I was at Fry's Electronics the other day and they had four devices on display, the jetBook, PRS-505, PRS-700 and something from Astak. Of the four the only one that actually worked correctly was the PRS-505. The jetBook appeared to have a dead battery. The Astak looked it had a crack in the display and a severe case of burn-in. (Which is weird since I didn't think an e-ink display would be susceptible to that.) And finally the PRS-700 seemed to be a little flaky in behaviour and the display was a little foggy.

I'll look into that if I haven't already gotten a device before it comes out.

The Astak was an EZ Reader (a Hanlin V3). This is the most similar of the EInk devices to the jetBook, e.g. it has folders and supports a wide range of ebook types. So it is a shame that the display model was broken. Frys is having a big sale on the EZ Reader on the 4th and 5th of July.

One difference to the jetBook is that the EZ Reader does support DRMed (encrypted) ebooks. The original firmware supported MOBI DRM, but Astak is about to switch to mobile Adobe Digital Editions (like the Sony's) which supports PDF and ePub with Adobe DRM. Since the firmware on all Hanlin V3's is interchangeable, you can have either MOBI DRM or Adobe DRM (but not both, because Amazon, which owns MobiPocket, has banned MOBI DRM from US EInk devices). I have three EInk readers, but the only one I use daily is my EZ Reader. It is a good device with solid hardware and software.

Maybe these pictures will be helpful (jetBook vs Kindle)

catagorization of books is a necessity on these eBook reader trust me! the coolest feature on the jetBook is that i can make my own files and folders and sub folder and sub sub folders...etc. lol. i can give them my own titles and arrange them how i please.

since it's recognized as an external device the jetBook doesn't require any software which makes it a lot faster and easier to do all this, that's why i'm really psyched about having mine (got one for my dad on fathers day too and guess where.....NEWEGG!!!, unbeatable in every price)

that's definitely a downside that you didn't get a chance to play with each of them. in technical aspects there is not that big of a discrepancy between battery life of an e-ink display to that of a TFT.

i personally just can't get used to the splash effect e-inks give off, but otherwise i read every day and charge my jetBook once a week -Sunday nights - and even when i travel it lasts and lasts throughout.

It's always better to see the actual devices you're interested in and hold them in your hand just so you can understand the ergonomics and screen clarity of each. and if you have them all in front of you just turn them on and right away you'll catch the differences. Let us all know if you get a chance to see them again and good luck!

That's certainly a plus in favour of jetBook. I wonder though, what if any legal sources of contemporary books are there? I know many O'Reilly books are available as .mobi files if you purchase it as an ebook from them. Any others?

Say I wanted to read the latest by Michio Kaku, would I be able to get it in a format readable by the jetBook? I already know it's available for both the Kindle and the PRS-505 from their respective stores. Where would I find it for other readers?

I use ebookprice.info to search for ebooks. In this case, it lists three titles for Physics Of The Impossible, which somewhat defeats the purpose of a single click search. All of these have DRM, and so can't be used on the jetBook without stripping the DRM (and typically then format shifting to whatever format you like best). It isn't at all clear that this would be illegal for personal use in the US on ebooks you bought, and certainly no one has ever been sued for doing so.

I'm a bit leery of anything requiring the stripping of DRM. That would be an issue for me. Oh, well. May get a jetBook anyway for its wide support of nonDRM formats. I don't know.

An odd thought. I frequently read lying on my side in bed with the book either flat on the bed or tilted slightly by my hand under the upper edges propping it up. Is this doable with any of the devices on the market or are there issues here I'm ignorant of?

Stripping any kind of DRM is illegal in the US under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Most telling is the RealDVD software case that, I think, is still in court. The RealDVD software allows you to make one backup copy of a DVD that is still encrypted! Yet the company has been sued and sales have been stopped. No DRM removal takes place, still the company got sued for allowing users to make a backup copy. However, if you do it in your home and do not distribute the files it is extremely unlikely that you would get sued for DRM removal. Besides, who would ever find out? I wouldn't tell everybody about it, though.

Ok I did it. Today I bought a Sony PRS-505. The reason was the price an the fact, that the Sony reader was the only device I could touch and try out at my bookstore together with the price did convince me that the PRS-505 is the right choice for me. I want a compact device mainly for reading during my vacations. Thanks to the Calibre database I can also use the Sony ebook reader on my Mac. The first impression is pretty good, but I will see after my vacations if it was the right choice. so far I am pretty happy with the device.

Regards

Wolfgang

Hope it works out well for you, Wolfgang. As for myself I'll probably be getting something later this month. I'm leaning towards the PRS-505 myself today. A number of the books I'd like to read on it are only available under DRM which rules out the jetBook. Also I think I really want e-ink which again leads me to either the Sony or the Kindle. In terms of price I think the PRS-505 is where I'll be going.

I'm still pondering so that may change and I really still have no idea what I'm going to do.

I can't really visualise what you're talking about here, but I read lying on my side in bed with my 505 in various different positions and I've never had any problems. (It's better than a paper book for me because I can put the font size up to maximum and read without my glasses on which is much more comfortable!) I have also used the prs customiser to turn the arrow wheel into a page turn button as well to give me added flexibility!

I imagine that you'd be able to do the same with any device, as they're lighter and easier to hold than many paper books.
