Someone here (either VR or yvanleterrible...sorry for my poor recollection) once used the phrase...I think it was "like butter on toast", to describe something that they enjoyed. I've always thought that was an excellent metaphor for the feeling.

I've inherited a silver-plated toast rack and several butter dishes. I rarely use them.
As for the cold butter problem: I just cut an ounce or so of cold butter, put it in a small dish and microwave it for a few seconds: not enough to melt it, but just enough to soften it slightly. Incidentally, one good reason to attend Paris meet-ups is that you can buy Poilane bread to take home. It makes extremely good toast. |

Hmmm, you don't have the right answer. You’re supposed to butter the bread before toasting it so it gets, nice and toasty brown. And you toast in on a griddle and have some cheese and maybe a slice or two of Spam between two pieces of the bread. Then you submerge the whole thing in a flat bowl of cream of tomato soup, an’ eat um all up!
MMMMMMM No Ka Oi! Oh I forgot, the bes' kine griddle is one of those George Foreman ones. It makes nice griddle marks on the bread. One of the small ones is just right for one of the above recipe! Last edited by wodin; 06-29-2009 at 10:59 PM. Reason: I forgot! |

Ah, buttered toast. For some reason I rarely think to have buttered toast so it is alway a treat when I do think of it. Naturally, since I always over organize things, I have a precise method of preparation.
1) remove bread and butter from refrigerator (Nice thick white bread and real(!) butter) 2) pop bread in toaster oven. 3) carefully shave thin slices of butter off stick whilst toast is toasting. 4) retrieve toast from toaster and lay out the thin, softened slices of butter so as to cover all of the hot toast. 5) repeat on second slice of toast 6) spread partially melted butter into first slice and repeat on second slice. Um, um, um! I never had real butter until I left home. Mom didn't believe in the stuff. I have never purchased margarine since I had my first taste of the real thing. Now for breakfast I save up the heels of the loaves, toast them and apply a thick layer of peanut butter followed by jelly, jam, or honey. Messy and delicious! The best way to start the day. ![]() |

I like mine to cool down a little before buttering it.
Spread a little French marmalade and eat. With a nice strong cuppa tea of course. Yum yum. Had mine three hours ago. Slan Mag. |
