The only time I've ever been offended by a meat eater at a meal was when a friend ordered hot wings, and after finishing two of them he set the bones on the edge of the salad plate I was eating out of. Why, I don't know. but ewwww.

My reaction wasn't nice.

Save me from the horror!
How do I deal with this dining nightmare next time??
What ammunition should I bring to the table to defend myself against the verbal 'veg' barrage?
Find common ground. Environmentalism should work. Then point out that cows are one of the primary producers of methane, (a global warming gas), and point out that you are just doing your part to help reduce the problem.

Remember all those BBQs with foreign dignitaries that Bush held on his ranch? Who knew Bush was such a rabid environmentalist!

Point out how many thousands of animals--rodents, insects, birds--are killed to support agriculture. (Those, of course, don't count. Most of them aren't cute or friendly, so nobody cares how many gophers die for their salad.)

Monocultures of plants are incredibly dangerous to the environment; the Kansas Dust Bowl wasn't caused by sheep farming.

Being able to have a healthy diet without meat is a matter of environment and, to some extent, wealth; healthy vegetarianism is pretty much impossible with plants native to most of Scandanavia. Even in the areas where the climate & ground will grow enough protein-bearing plants to support humans, having access to those year-round is not universal; it takes a lot more effort to supply a family with enough soy & nuts to cover all its needs, than to deal with seasonal changes in harvest by having the occasional chicken soup.

Animal protein is available year-round; plant protein is available either in season, or through wealth. It's very, umm, classist, to insist that vegetarianism is more moral than eating meat.

Go to whoever arranged the dining setup, tell them that "special needs" and "vegan" spaces do not mix, and demand they be separated... right now. If they refuse, ignore the rules and sit wherever you want. Life's too short.

Sitting next to a vegetarian at a wedding some years ago.

She asked, "So, how's the carcass?"

Without even looking up I replied, "Great! It has that 'took a long time and suffered' flavor!"

That ended that. (Actually, we were both joking and both got a good laugh out of the exchange. But I'm saving that in case I ever need it for real.)

But my standard response to vegetarians who claim moral superiority is to point out that Jesus Christ was not a vegetarian, but Charles Manson is. I've only used that a couple of times, but the look you get is priceless.

Ahh, I thought I'd somehow missed a benefit!

I never liked meat, so I never ate it. My 30's rolled around and a boyfriend ate chicken and steak all the time... I tried it (after making sure it was beyond dead... and yes, that means well, well, well, well, well done) liked some, so I've been eating that.

And, LA and In and Out was the best.... the one place I found that I could just say, well done 5 and not have to go into the shoe leather/hockey puck detail
