KovidGoyal,

I see you closed the ticket I opened. Just so I understand, I do have a follow up question.

I understand that you have created a folder structure for use by the Calibre database, and that folder structure makes sense as a database structure.

My question was in regard to the folder structure on the reading device. It appears that you have decided to replicate this structure on the reading device also?

Previously, when Calibre sent documents to my Kindle it sent them directly to the documents folder. Now it sends them to a subfolder along the lines of documents/authorname/book/book.mobi -- that may not be the exact path as I don't have my Kindle handy right now.

Anyway, is that your intent for the future? To replicate the PC folder structure on the reader also?

Thanks,
Michael

Over half of Calibre's users keep a few hundred books on their device. This is the only way to make their library manageable. I do realize that it is a bit more work to select a book for users who only have five books on their device but overall replicating the folder structure scales better as a library grows.

I prefer to format my own folder structure on my Bebook, using Windows Explorer, and I don't want (or need) from Calibre anything more than just transferring a converted title to my device, for ME to place it in an appropriate folder of MY choosing. I'm not certain what changes you've apparently made in this regard, but I'd appreciate no interference with the simplicity of what title organizing I've already worked out. Calibre is a great product, with usually great improvements -- but let's not get carried away! Anyway, that's MY opinion (for what little it might be worth).

Does the "Save to disk in a single directory" option do what you want?

On my current beta version (b10) I don't see that option. Where does it appear? It sounds good, though.

It is one of the options via the Save to Disk button at the top of the screen, or the Save To Disk right-click menu.

Click on the arrow next to the "Save to Disk" button on the toolbar. It's one of the choices.

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were giving me directions for saving to the main memory of my device. I didn't read your posting carefully enough. This option is (and has been) of course quite workable for me. I then copy the title to my device using Windows Explorer. But usually I've been copying the file from Calibre directly to the main memory of my device. I guess in future (as I understand it) I won't be able to do that without having the Calibre's new file structure impose itself. Thanks for the clarification.

Does your device main memory appear as a flash drive to your operating system? If so, you should still be able to use it -- just browse to your device and save. If you need to use an application to access your device, then probably not.

There are so many ways to otherwise accomplish what I want that I'm now not overly concerned. I guess I was just curious, and possibly mildly alarmed initially. Yes, my device appears as a flash drive (Removable Disk) on my Windows XP. At worse, a few extra steps may now be required. Thanks again.

Discovered some nasty behavior in Beta 10 yesterday. I can open a bug, but thought I'd post here to try to find out how to get more debug info, as I don't think this is one that can easily be reproduced.

Basically I have a number of books where Calibre is reporting that there are no formats available. However if I open the directory for that book I can see that there are indeed several formats available that Calibre is refusing to acknowledge.

Next step was to try to re-add the book via the edit dialog. While I could add a format via that dialogue, the minute I clicked ok the main window once again reported no formats available. Restarting Calibre made no difference.

Now the really nasty bug. If I try to change the title of the book for one of these books that's in this state then all the books in that subdirectory are permanently erased. There isn't anything in the trash to recover, they're just gone....

I can reproduce all the above quite easily, but anyone else would need to have books in a similar state. What useful debug data can I get to open a bug?

Hmm is there anything unusual about the title/authors of those books? Special characters or the like?

Not particularly. I don't know how many books in the whole library are affected, but most of the ones I've discovered are by 'Philip K. Dick', discovered while doing inventory on that author. But I would say only 30% of the books by that author are affected. Nothing special about the titles or the rest of the metadata.

Can you replicate it at all by re-adding the books? Without a replicatable test case, it will be very hard to debug
