So if you're vegetarian because of conscience, you might want to consider skipping on plants as well

mutation that allows signalling to other plants with the same genetic material is beneficial from an evolutionary standpoint but i dont see any reason to believe a plant is conscious of anything.

your points are very interesting however, all these complex mechanisms in plants are fascinating.

My sister gave us a pumpkin the other day (she can't get rid of the things - even after she ripped the entire plant out, it all came back). Tomorrow I'm making a pumpkin and potato curry, slow-cooked, that looked really nice in the recipe book, though I'll be making a few substitutes (as I tend to do) if I can't be bothered walking down the shops to get them. It'll be served (my sister and family will be there) on some plain, jasmine rice.

I'm not on a vegetarian diet - it just looked really nice. I did go vego once for about 12 months to help with dieting, though it only worked until I realised chips were legit. (you have to ask yourself why it took me so long to realise that, to which I say, "Get stuffed!").

My brother's vegetarian, for health reasons (Irritable Bowel Syndrome - eliminating meat from his diet was what worked for him). He's a decent cook (something I tend to find uncommonly common among the vegos I've known) and I could happily live on his diet, if he would cook it for me. I do an okay vego laksa, though I normally make chicken laksa.

The Loved One makes an absolutely delicious eggplant parmigiana.

Cheers,
Marc

sorry for the late reply rhari, i should clarify though when i said there is chicken broth in those dumplings, i mean a specific dish available in my supermarket, not all japanese dumplings ! i don't know about the general recipe.

The Visible One has been instructed to pass on his experience of the success or otherwise of said recipe as determined by his evil sibling, her family, The Loved One, and himself, and to pass on the recipe here (or there) should "success" outrank "otherwise".

did someone say vegan yorkshire puddings ??
http://www.vegan-food.net/recipe/671...hire-Puddings/

there are other recipes out there too !
I've made vegan cheese blocks, omelettes, meat substitutes, marshmallows and more at home - I can only imagine with how easy any effective these are that the yorkshires can be done brilliantly!
Theres even an added benefit when making meat analogues, you can put stuffing in the middle when you start or add extra herbs and flavours from the get go ...

some of the new foods my wife and i have been discovering since going vegan are brilliant, tempeh has so much potential, quinoa kicks rice's sorry ass and agave nectar is beyond awesome!

Great site -

But what is 'egg replacer', is it a particular brand or a generic name?

I wonder how safe some of the ingredients meant to replace eggs really are?

I'm not saying Yorkshire Puddings are not possible - they are - it's just that they don't rise like good YP's should ..... !!! There's nowhere to put the gravy!!!!!!!

Most are just a combination of potato starch/tapioca flour/vegetable gum/baking powder/Bicarb ....

For most recipies they are acceptable, but YPs and Chocolate Eclairs not so ..... (believe me I keep trying )

Starch and gum? I'd have thought there would need to be gluten or some other kind of protein in there. Shows you what I know.

Once I've woken up a bit more, I'll post my hot & sour soup recipe. It does involve an egg, and I'm skeptical of how well egg replacer would work in this case. But I have an idea for a replacement. Let me cogitate on this a bit while I make another pot of tea....

If you didn't mind the funny sensation on your teeth could you add more baking powder or bicarb?
