I thought Jonathan Creek was a blast! the BBC used to be my favorite channel now there is only repeated garbage on it, none of the programs that really were great and entertaining

I watched some episodes of QI Season 6 last night. At the end the commentator said "Next on BBC3..blah blah, and over on BBC2 you can catch another QI" or some such.
So, for those of you in the UK. I will assume there is BBC-1, BBC-2, BBC-3 and.. BBC-4? In that case, wouldn's all shows be on BBC? Or is BBC a different company than BBC-1 or BBC-3? Maybe there's BBC (classic shows), then you have BBC-1 through BBC-4? |

Slowly the amount of broadcasting increased. By 1947, the BBC had one television channel and three domestic radio channels - Home, Light and Third. (There was also a foreign radio service - the Empire Sevice, later the World Service.) This remained the state of broadcasting for about 20 years. Then a second television channel was added in 1964, and we got BBC1 and BBC2. In 1967, a fourth radio channel is launched, and the radio stations are renamed. The new one is called Radio 1, The Light, Third and Home services become Radio 2, Radio 3 and Radio 4. Regional BBC Radio stations start up. And this remains the BBC's line up for the next 25 years or so, until Radio 5, a live news and sport radio channel starts in 1990. And then over the past ten years there's been the digital TV and radio launches. Domestically, Radio 6 & Radio 7, and TV's BBC3, BBC4 and BBC News 24. And a global TV service too... And then we come to independant television. This started in the mid fifties, giving us a TV line-up of BBC and ITV, joined by BBC2 in the mid sixties. Channel 4 TV started in the early eighties. And now there are far too many channels, but no greater volume of good programmes.... |

Especially since the introduction of digital TV all sorts of new TV channels have been popping up - most people can now get 50 or so TV channels via a "Freeview" receiver (ie a non-subscription terrestrial digital receiver). The analogue TV transmissions are being switched off in a phased manner over the next 2 or 3 years (in my part of England it's happening in November this year) which will free up bandwidth for yet more TV and radio stations.

I see. Well, I suppose I will still call most every BBC1, 2, 3, 4, and ITV as a BBC show. It'll be wrong, most certainly, but I'm a Yank (funny enuff, a Rebel Yank, as I am from the south, here) so I can always blame my ignorance

We (myself and my visible friend) have several times announced an MR Meetup in our spa, complete with ZCD drinks and exciting temporal displacements. No-one ever turns up (Taylor514ce doesn't count as he doesn't use the spa because it makes his circuits short and his temper shorter; and pshrynk doesn't count either, seeing as he never leaves to be able to "turn up").
I agree there should be more, even if in less salubrious surrounds than my own. That Transporter thing previously mentioned would help. Yours in a large puddle of warm water, Adrian |

Next time I'm in my spa, I'll raise a glass and say 'hi.' Hopefully the sympathetic chronal-harmonic disturbances will make it to you in your spa (I have it on reliable authority that warm water amplifies the disturbance wave), especially if amplified by all other MR members with spas, tubs, pools, waterin' holes (especially geologic hot-springs) and extra-large super-soakers that have been out in the sun for at least an hour...

If you like Jonathan Creek then you might also enjoy the novels of John Dickson Carr (who also wrote under the pseudonym of Carter Dickson). Both JC and JDC are concerned with locked-room mysteries.

I actually get almost no fiction from the library, the print is usually just too small for me to read comfortably. Carl PS: Eye doc says I'll need bifocals the next time I get glasses ![]() |
