See http://turnitin.com for an example of a commercial service that does full plagiarism checking already. Licenses aren't cheap, but if I were opening a digital publishing service, I would regard this as a critical feature, to avoid liability-- and bad press. Sure, the lawyers may get you off with the "author signed a statement swearing it was original" method, but meanwhile you'll have spent tons of money and time in court and the image of your bookstore will have been tarnished. Safer to check every entry (perhaps even including those from "real" publishers -- remember Kaavya Viswanathan? (article and a more sympathetic view)

It's more which account the installation of Connect is registered to. I have both my home and work PC's registered on my account and I have no issues or differences that I can see that are dependent on where I download a file. I think others have mentioned doing similar things.

I'm pretty sure that isn't the case, for example, I know a fair number of the texts come from Rossetta Books, and they've certainly had them long enough to have proofed them thoroughly if they wanted to do so.

My guess is that Connect isn't doing any proofing to speak of, and these typos/conversion errors/whatever they are are coming from farther upstream in the process.

That's also what I figure the $200 to the conversion service partly pays for, basic proofreading and copy editing (which is why I think it's cheap).

IIRC, encyclopedia or dictionary publishers do something very much like this. They publish non-sense words and their descriptions to catch copy-and-lift pirates.

I know that drafting companies will often put in roads and streets that are not there to catch people that copy their maps, I guess I just had too much of a belief in people wanting to keep books to a higher standard.

Thanks NatCh for that tip that I can install multiple copies of CONNECT all keyed to the same account. This will come in handy as I can have one at home and another at work.
