Just about everything that gets onto a plane these days goes through an X-Ray scan; checked baggage as well as carry-ons. While not healthy for humans and (some say) camera film, X-Rays won't harm memory circuits in electronic devices. At worst, repeated exposure to X-Rays to an e-book reader will impede its ability to reproduce, which may, during a vacation, be a good thing.

They make me separate my Iliad in its own basket like its a laptop so you'll probably have the same deal. One of the guards told me that you're also 75% more likely to get a cavity search if you try to fly with a Sony Reader, apparently Amazon has worked out some deal with the airlines...

I just flew with mine. Put it in the basket for x-ray as others have sad. No problems.
Now, the crystal sculpture I put through x-ray was another story (showed up as solid black on the x-ray; guess it's full of lead). Make sure you put your Reader in a hard back case for carry on! |

The first few times I flew, I put in in the basket with other metal stuff (it's usually in my purse). last time, I left it in my purse. No problems any of the times.

The biggest problem with 'rules' is not the rule itself but the people who interpret them. Somehow I really doubt that when the original airport security rules were drawn up that the drafters were worried about crochet hooks or pocket nail clippers.
Checking out a laptop computer makes sense to me. There is room enough for a sizable amount of explosives and/or bioweapon material, and certainly the electronics to make it go boom or whoosh. Same with an e-book reader. The inside of my in-the-ear hearing aids don't. As I said before, I prefer that they err on the side of caution. The extra 15 seconds shouldn't be a problem for anyone who plans well. However, it would be swell if they could raise the standards required for the position of security guard just a wee little bit. I had to go through four security checks yesterday. Two in Japan and two in the US. At three of them they insisted that I put my reader into a separate tray. At one they said only laptops need to be separated!
But... hear's a new one on me... in the pre-take-off and landings, when all laptops and cell phones have to turned off, the message on all flights was "Please switch off all devices that have an on/off switch!" I turned off my hearing aids just to be on the safe side! Quote:

I don't know about the PRS 700, but my kindle 1 went through the security check just fine.

I just ask about an mp3-player, netbook etc. I forgot to declare - haven't flown in a couple of years - my netbook last month and the security agent picked it out and asked...no big deal. Again, as mentioned above, it's important to get to the airport with plenty of time to go through the checkpoints not to be rushed or frazzled. They even let my tsoureki (a Greek specialty pastry) go through to Germany!
My question (dumb) would be to know if the x-ray machines will disturb the data on an ebook reader? Probably not as the PC, camera, mps-player all go through fine. |

X-Rays won't have any effect on e-book readers, laptops, digital cameras, MP3 players, etc. Frankly, I never even had any bad results putting camera FILM through the scanners, and I did that often! The dosage isn't really high enough to cause damage except in much older model machines. No harm will come to your books, music or data because of the scanners.
