Re-reading "Subterranean" by James Rollins - the description of the tight spaces that a claustrophobic scientist nearly gets stuck in and being chased by blood thirsty creatures 2 miles underground are just a great way to become distracted - scared about something fictional instead of events in the real world :-)

Just finished 'Knife Music' by David Carnoy. Great read. I wish he'd write some more.

Rant ON

I am sorry but I have to vent this out now.
Guy Gavriel Kay. I read Tigana. I was not awed , but it was an OK book. Now I started Lions of Al-Rassan.

SPOILER ALERT
One of the protagonists captures an illegal raid in peacetime, lead by one of his enemies at home. The logical and only option would be to kill all the raiders. But NO, he lets them go. WTF?
Also there seems to be some kind of competition between authors who can describe unbelievable atrocities better. An unborn child is beheaded in this one. THAT IS CRAP. If I want atrocities, I just watch the news. We have enough of these in real life.
SPOILER ALERT OFF

I have had enough of GGK for life. Not only is it slow and ponderous and violent but it is also inconsistent and pointless. And not just this, the obsession of Tigana's main anatagonist with Tigana is also totally WEIRD. I thought that maybe that was just a one-time thing for the sake of the story. But NO. WRITERS: THINK THROUGH YOUR STORIES, WHAT IS THE LOGICAL THING TO DO FOR A CHARACTER IN THE STORY. If you break it, the illusion is gone, it is not a story anymore, but a fabrication.

I will NEVER EVER touch a book by this guy. (Pun intended). You are much better of reading real history. Yes real history it is also cruel and unjust, but at least it makes sense. GGK's writing is beautiful, but this is just NOT ENOUGH.

RANT OFF

The title suggests it has something to do with Jerome K Jerome's Three Men in a Boat?

*one google later*

OK - that looks like a fun book!

Alas, no Connie Willis in ebook I looked for her newest when I could not find it in print at my bricks and mortar store and came up empty.

Just finished 'Flowers for Elvis' by Julia Shuster, a multiformat Fictionwise find. It was okay. There was a character who the narrator meets and immediately decides is totally evil, and that spoiled the book a little for me because a) she would not know that at that point in the story, even with her 'omniscient' status and b) it prejudices the reader against that character; I would have preferred to see the action unfold and come to that conclusion myself. If it were me, I would have played it as the character having a sense of foreboding or something, not as an outright declaration that so and so is bad news. It did kind of color my impressions of the book, which had some interesting moments otherwise...

"An Elm Creeks Quilt Sampler"

The first three books in in the Elm Creek quilts series, by Jennifer Chiaverini.

While the book does have a quilts central theme, the stories are more about the how the relationships of the characters evolve, and are just pleasant reading.

Altho I have the entire series in hardback, I am enjoying reading them on the netbook more.

Just finished "Dr. Offig's Lessons From The Dark Side, Vol. 1." This is by P.S. Gifford.

If you enjoy short-short stories for a teen market, then this will be a good read. Plenty of sentiment, some clunkers, and some nice jewels. His writing is very good and evocative of real emotion, and with a nice story-sense overall.

I intend to read a few of these to my teenage students, and would recommend this to parents who wish to find a good horror book for their young son or daughter.

To conclude, this book is sanitary-fresh and free of dripping guts, with no dead or rotting cats in the bunch. (Unfortunately.)

Don

(I just now purchased "The Curious Accounts Of The Imaginary Friend," by Gifford. This is more for an adult audience. I'll keep my eyes peeled for one fat tubby.)
