Nope; I'm utterly worthless at CSS. I convert most of my docs into Reader-sized PDFs.

"Good defaults" are hard to establish, because there's so much reader preference variation. I like smaller fonts and tiny margins; if I'm not in a hurry, I set the font size to 9 and put 5px margins all around.

Best advice is probably to take a short-ish document (3-6 pages letter-sized) and make a dozen different LRFs from it, with different settings, and sort out which one you like best. It's time-consuming, but once you have the settings you like, you can save them & use them for everything.
