I have around 260 also... But I have put nearly all of them in a sub-directory under eBooks and that seems to speed up the boot time. At least it speed up dictionary lookup significantly.

I currently have 293 books on my Gen3 - all in internal memory. I've just timed it and it boots in 35 seconds.

Everyone, please, don't forget that we may have different "generations" of cybook with different hardware, so the boot time is certainly influenced by that too.

As I understand it the eInk display only draws power when it is changing so the Cybook does not draw any more power when it is 'on' than when it is 'off'. You might as well just disable the 'auto power off' feature so it always shows the last page you were on. Aside from the slight risk of touching one of the buttons by accident there does not seem to be any down side. No need to sit through that tedious boot sequence every time you want to start reading.

Has anyone else tried it?

The last part does not follow. The screen does not draw power, but the rest of the Cybook (the processor) does draw power while it is on.

The Cybook is a computer. Like any other computer, the CPU, RAM, etc, use power while they are running. Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because the screen only uses power when it updates, that the rest of the device is also drawing no power. That is incorrect.

Personally, I turn off my Cybook when I go to sleep, and turn it on first time I want to read (usually when on train going to work). Then I keep it "on" all day through, while just in case making a bookmark each time I close the cover (to avoid losing my page when unintentionally pushing the navigation button ! )

For thoses, how much time your Sony stay in standby ?
How much time the Cybook stay in standby ?

The "standby feature" where it took 1 to 3 seconds to reopen the book is the same standby as the cybook when he waits you to press a button to do something (ie when the LED is not green)

When the Cybook is Off, it drain no battery, so you can store it for weeks or month without losing battery. If you leave your PRS in standby mode, you can't store it for weeks/montht without losing battery life.

And when you need to cold boot a PRS 505/700 it took the same or in fact for thoses I have more time than the Cybook Gen3.

What could be missing on the Cybook, is a "lock button" feature, that will not let it wakeup when you press anything but the power button.

The Sony will typically last for 2-3 weeks on a battery charge, when left on, compared to about 4 days for the CyBook, so it does better in that regard.

On the other hand, if you do switch off the Sony it takes several minutes to boot, whereas the CyBook will generally boot in about 30s. On both machines, the more books you have stored, the longer will be the boot time.

The SOny and the Cybook didn't use the same components and battery. (mainly the memory chip that have a great impact on battery life during standby)

I have PRS-500 and it works for 2-3 weeks on standby with approximately 1 hour of reading each day.
You can not switch PRS-500 off.
The only times I have seen it booting was
- when I switched it on after purchase
- when I had to reset it (2 times so far)
- when the battery drained too much (3 times so far)
Not bad for a 2 year old device that is used every single day.

You can - pressing the reset button turns it off. But you are right in the sense that it's not meant to be switched off in normal usage.

Just as an aside, with 118 books on it, my Sony just took 56 seconds to boot.

Of course even without the reset button you can, just press the power button a long time, it will switchit off instead of standby
