It is a matter of age, too. When you are 20, you won't think much about straining your eyes by reading on an LCD screen. But it might well come back to haunt you later, ask your doctor. And when you are past 40, one look comparing e-ink with any kind of LCD using currently available technologies will have you choosing e-ink for reading longer than 1 hour.

I have the Sony 505 and the Nokia 800. I prefer to read on the latter, using FBReader. The eInk does NOT have enough contrast and I find it strains my eyes. I am almost 67 and recently read several long Russian novels on my old Clie -- no eye strain. I find the Sony usable, but hardly ideal. It flashes, it's slow, and its contrast is terrible. I've ordered the SmartQ 7, as I want a larger screen and it looks ideal for my uses. Chacun son gout.

If I had to buy a device solely for reading purpose, I'd go for the sony 505. I do not own the SmartQ so can't comment on it. I used to read on computers (desktop, laptop, netbook) for long hours and felt dizzy, eyes strained, and saw "flying flies" (like when you look at bright light for a few seconds, sth like that...sorry I dont know how to describe it clearly). Maybe I have bad eyes, I dont know
![]() Thats why I bought the sony 505 last year. To me its like reading a real book and no more watery eyes for me! |

The other problem I have with devices like the SmartQ7 is the short battery life. This feels like an advertising thread to me, to tell the truth. |

About that short battery life. Have you ever timed yourself reading? When I first saw it, I thought it was short. Until I timed myself. And I hardly ever read more than 4 hours straight. I might read a few minutes in the morning, a few minutes while waiting for my partner to pick me up after work, an hour of two in the evening and then I'm going to sleep. At that time, the device can be charged. Only rarely do I have to charge while reading (sickness can be a reason, or a book that I just can't put away...) Quote:

Battery lasts a day!
![]() My Sony 505 LASTS A WEEK (or more). And I never even switch it off. Frankly for book reading LCD is inferior to eink in every way. The SmartQ is a nice multi-purpose device - if you need such a device, it is fine. I need a book reader and a laptop - I have no use for palmtop like devices. The handling if SmartQ on this site is a bit weird imho. It got a very large front page space, moderators are attacking anyone who does not like it.... ![]() What is going on? |

And I'm not attacking people. I'm responding to posters who make unfounded and obviously untrue statements, like the one you made above. If "LCD is inferior to eink in every way", then can you tell me where I can get an epapaer device that is: color, touch screen, has a refresh rate as fast as LCD, and is as cheap as the SmartQ 7? Please let me know. I'd like to buy one. |

Nate, your arguement would have more weight if you wern't doing the same thing.
He didn't say "LCD is inferior to eink in every way" He said: "for book reading LCD is inferior to eink in every way" I don't agree with that statement (at least not completely) But I would say LCD is better for some applications, e-ink for others. Why do you need a refresh rate as fast as lcd, colour, for just "reading"? And "touchscreens" arn't inherant to LCD either for that matter. They would be nice sure, but they are not neccessary. You tell me where I can get an LCD device which is as readable as e-ink in bright sunshine and that doesn't give me migraines when reading on the tube... |

Here is the thing I don't think anyone understands. I don't think either technology is better; both have their strengths and weaknesses. I'm just sick and tired of other people making unfounded claims of superiority. |
