I used to live in the Great Sandy Desert in Aust...Love the heat (dry) and the cold, clear, crisp nights...and the smell of an approaching thunder storm as it rolls across the sky for miles.....And the sunsets that light the sky in layers of almost irridesent colours from purples to pinks, reds, yellows...(sigh).............If only the deserts also had civilisation.

the totaly unremitting 31 degree C heat and 80+% humidity 24/7 is getting a little ..... much..... but the lifestyle and travel ops.....well......always a balance somewhere, I guess

Apparently, one can subscribe to electronic public library sites - and check out ebooks over the Internet! And then - if you must have the latest bestseller - buy from the Sony store (or other online store).

The Kindle (2) seems to be faster (whispernet) and easier(?) - but you must purchase your books from the Amazon-Kindle-store at 9,99$ each - which can really add up. Even I (being employed full-time) read 1-2 books a week.

I can envision the costs mounting up very quickly.
You can access those free sites from the Kindle, also.

The Kindle can access the library as well, just takes a few further steps.

You must either belong to your local library, or know someone who will get you a card from theirs. Librarys usually require you live within their district. There are those, like NYPL, that will sell subscriptions for $100 yr.

Not all books are available thru the library systems. If you must have a particular book, you may still have to buy it.

Kindle books are less expensive than Sony books. Also, not all books are $9.99. Thousands and thousands sell for less. That price points is for best sellers. You can also purchase your books from other places than Amazon.

I think its a matter of time before Sony book prices will be in line, but right now you are right.

I don't have a clue what the future holds. I only know that I wish I had a Kindle. So I could buy more books which Sony won't sell me. (And which I don't have time to read.) Anyway, congrats, F1Wild.

Realize I wasn't saying it was 'better'. I think both devices are good.

No. I can afford to buy one. But I can't imagine spending that much cash to have two of them. Such is the wrath of guilt/conscience/dementia.

Of course you can afford to buy one. However, just think.

You could then turn around and give it to someone here who deserves it!

Oh. Wait.......................................Never mind!
