well, la fête de la musique ("music fest") is (originally) a french thing, which has spread to other european countries ; on the first day of summer, every band in the country goes out and plays on a street corner / in a bar / park / church / boat / concert hall / etc., and it's free concerts all day long.

imagine more drummers than you can count (around 80, for the largest tonight, like i said), drumming and dancing at the same time, and then a dense crowd all around them dancing along, and the whole phenomenon progressing (very slowly, but with enthusiasm) along a street.

the percussion in paul simon's obvious child is a good example of batucada but i can't find it on youtube to embed it...

the ones i saw tonight were dancing like the ones in the paul simon video, but, there were 80 of them.

there are thousands of concerts in paris for la fête de la musique but i go back to the place ste. marthe every year since i found out about the batucada. it's amazing.

I'm exhausted. It's 1:02 a.m. and we have just returned from Chris's parent's house - we ended up going there (which is another hour out of Chicago) after his graduation ceremony(which was held in downtown Chicago).
It was a beautiful day, a triumph for Chris, and I am so proud of him I could just burst - (possibly into tears - I'm that tired).

Congratulations!! It sounds like a loooooong day, buta very fulfilling one. hope you're happily in dreamland! (you are allowed to sleep. Zelda is not...)

As I am probably in the last (earliest?) time zone, we just got back from taking daddy to Father's Day dinner and I am orchestrating the showers and bedtime routine from my chair. It's not as effective as I'd like.

In Montréal, every Sunday morning, people gather up on the foothill of Mont-Royal, a mountain in the middle of the city, and many bring their drums along, so it gets to be a small music fest all day. Here's what it looks like:

thanks for the video ! that looks like a lot of fun. we often get drummers and junglers and acrobats in parcs here too (when the weather is nice) and there are one or two parcs in particular where they usually congregate. but mostly on a smaller scale than on Mont-Royal i think ! (outside of the fête de la musique, obviously.

).

also, one of the batucadas i saw (batala, the HUGE one) practices sometimes at the parc de la villette, which is quite near my house ! they are currently stuck using a studio because of construction work going on in the parc but hopefully they'll be back sometime this summer, and then maybe i'll stop by and listen !

and i think they have this in common with ebook readers : whenever you talk to them, they want you to try it out so they can convert you !
