I'd like to propose that it is patently obvious to all right-thinking men that The Lord of the Rings is 3.14 books, with the inclusion of "The Hobbit".

Well, this is a dead thread, but I ran across the following to day, & so I just had to post it:

"A trilogy is a set of three books that are related in theme but that can stand independently of one another as three individual stories."

That does not describe LotR, in my view.
