And you really have to get past Pyramid also since it is a very weak book.

I have noticed that people that like the Disc-world books also like Wodehouse. I think they have the same type of humour.

I'm afraid I don't think he's even in the same league as Wodehouse. Pratchett writes amusing books; Wodehouse was a genius.

I think they have the same kind of genius. If I understand correctly Wodehouse perceived status have increased with time so maybe you just have to wait some years and than you will call Pratchett a genius also...

That is how the author started the series, as a spoof of the High Fantasy novels. However, it sort of took on a life of its own.

I realize that he is not to everyone's taste, but I happen to think that Pratchett is a genius. Right up there with the greats of English (Language) Literature. It takes a great writer to keep me not just entertained, but enthralled, and Pratchett does that to me.

As for the folks who started the first book in the series, and put it down, only to wonder if they should give it a second try, I started "Atlas Shrugged" at least three times before I got past page 50, and then it turned into one of the best books I ever read. Sometimes you just have to keep hacking away at the stone to uncover the gems.

And, I am with those who say, screw the complex charts. Just Google "Discworld publication order" and go with that. Anything else is like trying to read a great novel by starting with Chapter 7, and then reading Chapter 22, and then Chapter 1, and generally skipping haphazardly around the book from then on. The central characters don't evolve properly if you don't give them a chance. Backstory is key in this series and the only way to get the full view is starting with book one and working your way through ... in publication order.

Wodehouse's main "problem" as far as his reputation is concerned is that he was widely perceived in Britain as being a nazi collaborator, because he made several broadcasts on German radio during WWII while living in occupied France. He probably wasn't a collaborator as much as just very politically naive, but it ruined his reputation in the UK, which is why he lived the remainder of his life in the USA. It's probably really only in the last 20 years or so that people have started to forget all that and appreciate the genius of his writing.

Well, I also think the humorous books are not taken seriously while the author is alive. Some time has to pass before it become OK for the literature people to consider the books to be literature. And that is a problem Pratchett has since he also write books in fantasy worlds.

Sir Terry has also written several books which have little or nothing to do with Diskworld or magic, but in their own way are very good - Strata, The Dark Side of the Sun, Carpet People, and the Bromeliad Trilogy (Truckers/Diggers/Wings) come to mind. But I haven't seen them as ebooks.
