I just noticed that the Kindle edition of the first Discworld novel is titled The Color of Magic instead of The Colour of Magic. I wonder if the editors "fixed" other spellings.

No. It is High Fantasy.
It most definitely is.

You see, they even have Cohen The Barbarian - THE hero.
Cohen does not know how old he is exactly, but estimates that he is between 90 and 95 years of age ;-)

Here I simply HAVE to use another quote

I couldn't call it high fantasy. Half fantasy and half satire, and not satire of just fantasy - life and culture satire. He's brilliant. He made me spit out my coffee once. After that I was more cautious reading him

Dangit, y'all! I tried reading the first Discworld book years ago, and put it down after about two chapters and gave up. Now I'm going to have to try it again...

Okay. This thread just made these books to my short read list.

here is the order for anyone else who wants it
http://www.librarything.com/series/Discworld

now I'm gonna go find "the Color of Magic"
BTW, it's not just the Kindle version that is Color, and not Colour. There are a ton of print copies that have that title too
look http://www.librarything.com/work/1044440/covers/

and this was in the other thread

I've been meaning to read some Pratchett for over a decade now. I think this time I'm finally going to get around to reading some for real (but first I need to finish Anathem, which thankfully is moving along a lot quicker than I thought it would, no doubt in part due to not needing to haul a 5lb mass with me everywhere).

Anyhow, I think I've settled on ePub as my preferred format. Thankfully I can get these books as ePubs from Books on Board. But the Diesel link earlier intrigued me since you can get the bundles for a slight discount. Does anyone know if Diesel's ADE books are available as ePubs or if they're just encrypted PDFs?

Guards! Guards! or Wyrd Sisters are probably the best ones to start with. Skip the forewords and get to the actual stories. Just a suggestion. I'm a giant Pratchett fan but I didn't enjoy Sourcery, Mort, Thief of Time or Equal Rites until after I was hooked and never did really like Eric.

Almost every scene the Dean and the Bursar or Nobby are in I nearly pee myself and bug anyone within earshot at some funny scene they couldn't possibly understand.

Dammit, now I need to reread them all. Well.. I never read them all. I probably read like 10-15.. they're short, quick reads.

There's even a slightly more serious book in the series called "Night Watch" which is still excellent.

Forget that silly useless annoying chart. It's all wrong. There is a simple way to know the reading order. The reading order is the order in which the Discworld books were published. It's that easy.

The best way to find the chronological order of ANY books written is www.fantasticfiction.com

You enter an author, or book, and everything done by that author is listed. Here is the Terry Pratchett page.....

This time you might want to start with some other book. When you are hooked, then proceed reading the Colour of magic.
Try for example Small gods

I wanted to start reading the Discworld, but find that I already got a list of books that I want to read as well. The problem is that If I start on a series of books, I want to finished them, but 32 books.....

For me that going to be about 32 weeks or 8 months (give or take a few days).
But I also want to read book 29 'Going Postal', that in it self is making my laugh already.

Well stated. That will help anyone wanting to start with the proper reading order of Discworld.

The reason to read the Discworld series in order is that the way it's written, you lose out by not knowing what came before. Pratchett does not summarize what came before. So you can miss out on something that helps you get the reference or joke because you don't know what is being referenced. So reading in order will give the best reading pleasure.

I know some don't think much of The Colour of Magic, but it does introduce Rincewind and the sapient luggage which really does need to come first.

At the risk of being flamed into the next galaxy - I think this forum has found something almost everyone can agree on - regardless of eReader/format choice - we love Terry Pratchett - at least some of his works - and have personal favorites that travel with us mentally through our lives! Well done Sir Terrence!!
