Yeah, I did, but it's hard to ask them about colors when they can't see what you're talking about, and I need green ribbon too, for fringes.

Yeah, that's how I got the eyelash yarn I used for the scarves. I've had really good luck with doing that - but I've never used sock yarn before, and would really prefer to be able to see how it's going to feel before I buy it. Also, with shipping times, my break would be nearly over before I got the yarn!

I just keep a yearn stash for when I get the urge to make something. I've got a laundry bin full of yarn and crochet cotton and a load of patterns. I'm planning a bedspread in Irish crochet, but it will probably take a couple of years. However, it could be made into a tablecover or small throw if I get seriously bored with it.

I need to do the same in regards to a yarn stash. Assuming I ever get to a yarn store again! I'll probably end up taking Ricky's advice and just ordering it online.

I too keep a yarn stash, however, mine is for needlepoint. I also keep a large stash of fat quarters for making quilts. Naturally, both are kept in spectral order sub-groupings with the main distinction being whether the main color is warm or cool (warm greens are separate from cool greens .... my "warm" boxes, both of yarn and of fabric, go from warm reds, through to warm violets, and then the cool boxes do the same).

I haven't done much needlepoint lately, but that's because I have always painted my own canvases, and I simply haven't had the time lately. I used to have tons of time for that .... on slow nights in the morgue. Ah, good times.

Yarn - Check. (probably will be used for weaving, as my knitting attempts have all failed.)
Fabric - Check. (sometimes clothing, sometimes fabric-covered boxes....)
Beads - Multiple checks.
Paper - Check. Usually for origami, sometimes other projects.
Silver wire - Check. Also GF, brass, and copper, different gauges, hardnesses, and shapes.
Polymer clay - Check. Including odds and ends of canes from different projects.
Silver clay - Check. Also enamel to mix with or fuse onto silver clay.
Bits of wood - check. For making beads and other small projects.
PVC pipe - check. Multiple colors and diameters. Well, you never know!
Glass rods and mandrels - Check. Hopefully I'll be able to fire up the torch this weekend.
Glitter, lacing, plastic tablecloths in different colors, sheet foam, silver bubble-wrap, low-temp plastic, low-temp metal casting kit, soap making supplies, candy making supplies.... all check.

Spare time - oops, I knew there was something I forgot to stock!

That's why I agree that "yearn stash" is the best description for all of the above.

My husband was talking to a mutual friend of ours this morning. Somehow, don't ask me how, the mutual friend got the impression that if we won the lottery and I *could* quit my job that I would be bored silly within three weeks. I took great pleasure in informing him that he was sadly mistaken...

He probably doesn't notice all the work you do around the house and he believes in house elves.

The only times in my life that I've ever been bored were while waiting for someone else to decide what we should do next (or what they were going to do, freeing me up to decide what I was going to do).

Shel, we have a wonderful yarn store here. The ladies that own it raise alpacas, goats, etc. and weave some of the yarns they sell in the store. The hand dyed alpaca yarn is absolutely gorgeous! You'll have to come to sunny Virginia and I'll take you there!

Have you asked your mother-in-law for help? I know my friend who lives in the same town is taking knitting classes at a yarn shop in the area. I'll have to email her to find out where it is exactly.

For future reference, though: There are some online stores that will send you yarn samples to see if it's what you want. You have to buy the samples, but it can be worth it. Patternworks, which also has a catalog, is one of them.
