No more sending Mobipocket via Whispernet?

Has Amazon quietly stopped allowing us to send Mobipocket-format books to the Kindle over Whispernet?

This afternoon, I tried to send one to my wife's K2. The book never got there and I received the "problem with your message" which reads, in part:

Quote:
The following document and image types are supported as attachments:

Personal documents: Unprotected Microsoft Word documents (*.doc), Rich Text
Format documents (*.rtf), HTML documents (*.html, *.htm) and Text documents (*.txt)

Images: JPEGs (*.jpg), GIFs (*.gif), Bitmaps (*.bmp), and PNG images (*.png)
The same is reflected on the Kindle support page. The strange thing is that it worked the other night.

I don't know about through whispernet. I usually don't bother with that for my own books. I just send them through the usb. But I just tried an unprotected mobi via usb and it went through fine. So they haven't stopped supporting that type of file at least through the usb.

If you say it worked, fine, but they've never advertised nor documented the ability to *email* MOBI or PRC files to the Kindle. You can, as always, download them directly via the web.

I tried it again last night and it did indeed work. All I can figure is that something corrupted the attachment on my end.

Thanks all...

I still use this, and don't mind the small fee. I gave my K1 to my teen-aged nephew when I got the K2, and the convenience of being able to email him new mobi pocket books whenever I want more than justifies the cost to me.

Otherwise, I'd simply use a USB cable.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

The subscriptions calibre creates can sometimes be VERY large.. not cost effective to send them. I don't mind paying (hell, I pay for the subscriptions I use) but that plus Amazon's fee is too high.

So is there a standalone app which will convert .mobi/.prc ebooks directly to .azw which can be used on a typical WinXP machine?

The Kindles read unencrypted mobi files with no conversion.

Well, first of all, you don't have to convert .mobi or .prc books to .azw. If these books are DRM-free, you can simply put them on the Kindle using the USB connection and then read them. If they are DRM-laden, then I'll leave it to you to find the deDRM routine and learn how to use it to liberate the files.

If you absolutely insist on having your files named nnnnn.azw, then a simple rename of the file will suffice. (Note that I've also done the reverse and renamed a DRM-free .azw file to .prc so that I could read it on my Blackberry.)

As far as software goes, Mobipocket Reader, Mobipocket Creator, Calibre, BookDesigner, and Stanza can all emit Mobipocket files compatible with the Kindle. There are also some programs around that will explode a Mobipocket file into html + images so that you can create another eBook format or otherwise utilize the "book" on some other device.

Thanks! However, I submit that Stanza does such a POOR job of converting to Kindle or Stanza as to make them unreadable! (As if I *really* wanted each and EVERY chapter to have the book title and author info embedded within! )

What about DRMed mobipocket. If I buy them from another store is there any way to register the Kindle 2 device with the PIN (hope this makes sense)? If not, do you know if there are any plans to open the Kindle to more formats?

Yeah, Stanza is a disaster for mobi format.

I believe you'll need to use the Kindlepid script/program to get your ID#, to use to register your Kindle with other DRM'd ebook stores. The link to the program was removed here because of a complaint by Amazon.com, but references to it still exist, and google should be able to turn it up.

Amazon apparently very much does not want Kindle users to be able to purchase DRM'd books from other ebook stores.

When I was experimenting with Fictonwise.com the other day it wouldn't accept my Kindle2 PID.

What I wound up doing was getting a PID from mobipocket and using that with the 1 free DRM'd mobibook they offer and then running that file though mobidedrm. The PID for mobipocket reader 6.2 is displayed in the help --> about box.
