I think the wireless coverage hypothesis is very likely, but I'll point out that the "first time charge" effect might also be significant. Some battery types (I forget which) require several charge cycles to build full capacity. Or, the software or chip that tracks the battery capacity may have required a full cycle to calibrate itself properly.
