EDIT: I found the fix. It was on the chinese forum. Whoever posted the fix had it right but the syntax is not correct so I had to remove spaces here and there. If you are having this problem here is the answer. Open evilvte and type this command exactly how you see it:

sudo touch ~/.Xauthority && sudo chown $LOGNAME ~/.Xauthority && chmod 775 ~/. Xauthority

I was able to install Mirage (image viewer) on the new firmware after I used this command.
It worked for me to just do touch .Xauthority in a terminal in the ~/user directory.

Thanks rogue. That was informative. However i still would want to know how it renders a normal pdf file (lets say a computer ebook from sitepoint, with images, different fonts etc) and how easy is the text to read? Its one the most killing problems on SONY PRS for me.

Before in < 3.0 firmware, we had the mouse pointer all the time. Even if you have a mouse plugged in. Now with a mouse plugged in, you don't get a mouse cursor.
Refer to the www.eletroworld.cn service's "Add a mouse icon", that will be worked.

Here's a flickr stream: beginning with the third pic, he starts to concentrate on PDFs...

Do a search for "chippy, review, smartq7" and you can learn a lot, including with video. He's over on umpcportal, I believe.

hi all, i have a small question.

After upgrading to v3, the virtual keyboard was different. it was a small keyboard, located on the top-left corner, pretty useful for typing texts while still seeing the screen.

i don't know what i did but now i m back with the old virtual keyboard, taking 1/3 of the screen and located in the bottom...

any idea how to have the small keyboard again?

thanks!

I posted this in another thread, but I think this might be the place that people look for it. If you're using the 3.0 version of the OS, smplayer is in Chinese.(Well, mine was in Chinese):

Open /home/user/.config/smplayer/smplayer.ini with leafpad.

Change language=zh_CN to language=en_US or whatever version of English you prefer. It's about 3/4 of the way down, under the [gui] section. Restart smplayer if it's running.

Voila, as the French say: Anglais!

Maybe you have the finger keyboard selected. If you hold the keyboard icon a box will pop up. Choose standard then close and that should solve your problem.

Hey,

So I finally created an unofficial SmartQ board so the growing community can gather in one place. I'm not trying to make people leave from here; I think it is great to have multiple sources of information. Beside, any information originally posted here and reported on my board will mention its origin.

Enjoy !

  4. Insert it into your powered off Q7
  5. Hold down the FUNCTION key (it's on the front, next to the + and - keys -- on the bottom, when you hold it in proper landscape)
  6. Connect the charger. You will see an orange LED light up. Release the FUNCTION key.
  7. Sit back and relax, let the firmware update (Chinese characters, ending in ... indicate it is flashing. If you see characters ending in a ! instead, you have some sort of problem.)

It will reboot itself into the new OS. You will lose any modifications you've made to your current setup.

I've upgraded the firmware successfully but after choosing english the screen stays white and nothing happens.

EDIT: Reformatted the card reflashed q7 selected English and waiting for OS to boot but the screen stays white

I had this problem, Gibbo. Try to download the firmware image directly from the SmartQ devices page. I tried from the links provided here and had issues. After I downloaded the image from SmartQ it worked perfectly.

Lightbulb ON getting updated softwares running on Smart Q7

I've done a research in the past days on the issue that the softwares from all firmware versions (including 3.0) are outdated. This has resulted on a detailed question on the Launchpad Answers: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/74252

Cross your fingers. When I get a reply I will post a note on this forum topic.

That's weird. The link in my post is direct to SmartQ...

Glad you guys solved it, though.
