Orion Universe.

Solar system/planets of ben bova universe are the two that I've heard of.

Funnily enough I have been playing the miniatures game on and off for 20+ years. I find WH40K a fascinating and very gothic/dark setting. Some of the books are superb and others are very bizarre.

For a good series within that universe, set 40,000 years into a very bleak, dark and brutal future, try;

Gaunts Ghosts - Dan Abnett.
Eisenhorn and Ravenor - Dan Abnett
Souldrinkers - Ben Counter
Ultramarines - Graeme McNeill
Ciaphas Cain - Sandy Mitchell

There are others, but these stand out for me.

That reminded me of the Classic Battletech setting. Like all these vast gaming tie ins, there are many books available but only a few good reads. In that regard, Michael Stackpole is the better pick. Once Wizkids got the franchise from FASA, it all went pear shaped.

the exact name is the gran tour series (had to go wiki it)

its about the colonization of the solar system/planets. this is the series that "mars" is a part of. probably one of his most famous books

I'm entirely incapable of choosing a favorite scifi universe , but this is probably not it, but worth mentioning is Sean McMullen's Greatwinter series, great concept, but not the best, in my (not) humble opinion.

Very true and it is good to see new novels coming out in the series. I would hope they shove the lamentable Jihad dross aside, but that would be hard to do.

I really like the "natural" feel of the Whedon's Firefly universe, as well as Bova's Kinsman series books. I have an appreciation for realistic, but still very interesting.

Clarke's universe was also as interesting, for similar and different reasons: He made even the fantastic sound possible, if only because there was so much of space for the fantastic to be residing in.
