Interesting. In that case, I am somewhat at a loss to understand why the PDF support is so lacking.

Open source PDF viewers like Okular support clickable links, so I don't see why it would be hard for Amazon to do so.

Actually PDF support is fine; they just slapped the viewer on there. But there's very little *integration* with the other Kindle fuctions.

How does DX compare to DR1000 when it comes to read a book. DX claims that we can actually read a page of a book as it shows in the real life, does DR1000 has the same ability?

Also, this question may seem stupid because I never buy ebook from amazon so I am really not sure what format they use, could anyone please tell me?

So far, it seems DR1000 is a safer option

Amazon has two formats, TOPAZ is only available on the Kindle and is typically used to get older printed books into an ebook format (and is not very common) and AZW is Amazon's name for the same MOBI format that is used on the DR1000S. The Kindle's reader software is also based on the same Java MOBI reader as on the DR1000S.

The Kindle only has 6 font sizes, but the DR1000S has many more sizes and a much larger maximum font size. The Kindle can lookup "instantly" in one dictionary but the DR1000S can lookup words in multiple dictionaries. The KDX has significantly better image support in ebooks. I don't think the DR1000S can use landscape mode on MOBI books, as the KDX can.

Amazon sells books primarily in a special DRMed MOBI format called AZW. They occassionally sell books in a slower, less-readable, custom font format called Topaz (AZW1 or TPZ). You can't easily tell in advance if you're getting a MOBI or TPZ book. The Kindle also reads non-DRM MOBI and TXT files without conversion. Amazon does not sell PDF files.

@wallcraft and sirbruce, thank you so much for your help.

Based in your answers, I think there would be no problem if I use the DR1000 to read the ebooks that purchase from Amazon, is it right? Just to echo the question I have before, since DR1000 has so many font sizes, does it normally show the full page of the book as DX?

Also, does DR1000 have the rotation function as the DX?

Theoretically, if you strip the DRM off of them, you could read the Amazon books on a DR1000 I think. Not because the DR1000 doesn't support DRM, but because the Amazon books will be encoded for a specific Kindle, not the DR1000. But you can't buy Amazon books anyway unless you have a Kindle registered on the account, so I really don't see this as a viable option unless you plan on owning both.

I think the main benefits of the iRex really are the SDHC support and directory style filing. Both are awesome. I guess they are really advantages for people who have huge collections.
I'm at about 75 books, so the Kindle can handle that pretty easily.

I was really looking forward to the irex full size devices but after seeing their poor response to community questions, the high price, and the size of it, I decided against it. I'm now thinking of the DX instead, but might be able to be swayed back if the DX can't do what I really need (which is to read technical papers). Any thoughts from a DX owner (or irex) on whether the devices can do:

1. Can you usb transfer pdfs to the dx? (I don't have cdma access)
2. Can you shut off cdma? (battery life!)
3. I need to read technical papers in it, something like (for instance) this: http://www.cs.usask.ca/~cab938/icalt...leva_cooke.pdf -- is this readable on a dx?

Thoughts always welcome...

Yes; you can do this on all Kindles.

I just have a irrelevant question but since I already had a similar question here, I thought it would be acceptable to have it here. Here is my question, do we need to purchasing an sony ereader in order to buy book in its online store? What kind of format they use for the ebooks, pdf or something else?

Sony's eBook store uses a format called "LRX", which only the Sony can read.

I own both...

The DR1000 just sits on my shelf of shame of I didn't do enough research devices. it has been way too quirky. PDF support war really slowI really wanted to like the device especially with the newspaper support, etc. After 6 months+I gave up on it. Though, to be fair haven't updated to the latest 1.5 firmware.

Kindle DX on the other hand turned it on and everything just works. All my old books were sent over to it from Amazon with a couple of clicks. Leather cover keeps itself closed with some kind of magnet. Blogs get auto pushed, Keyboard lets you search with ease.

Just my 2 cents.
