Actually you are closer than you could imagine, I was very nearly extinct in 1998 - but that is another story!
Don't you think a hairy nosed otter rampant would look much more fetching than that other beastie?

Where's My Cow?

My kids were very fond of Dear Zoo

And yes, of course you can't leave out bits. I remember hearing the same story over and over myself from one Aunt - The Elephant's Child

"The Great, Grey-Green, Greasy Limpopo river, all set about by fever-trees...."

It's just not the same if you leave bits out...

I read 50+ (novel-length) books a year...

Hi all, just found this forum last night and haven't gotten ANY reading done since I found it Looks like hanging out here can be highly addictive!
I read at least one book a week, usually more and I mostly read fiction novels. I've read a lot more than usual since I got my reader a few months ago since I don't have to waste time making trips to the library anymore! I read for pure pleasure (don't have much required reading for work outside of the dozens of daily emails) and rarely read anything I don't want to read.

I was surprised at the many posts stating some of you feel guilty about not finishing a book! The way I see it, there are SO many books I want to read I don't want to waste any of my precious reading time forcing myself to read something I'm not interested in (I did plenty of that when I was in school!) And thanks to pdurrant and Moejoe, that precious time seems even more precious now because, until I read their posts, I'd really never thought about the fact that there are some books I'll never have time to read (gasp!) or that there is an actual number of possible books I'll be able to read before I die (if I live for 40 more years - and they may be stretching it! - and read an average of 60 books a year that's ONLY 2400 more books I have time for!! ) So thanks you two - those thoughts might just keep me awake tonight!!

Thanks to Andybaby for your post and link to librarything. I didn't know such a site existed! (Don't laugh, my face is usually buried in a book!) I've been keeping track of all my books, to be read list and wish list in a notebook for almost 8 years now! This site will come in very handy!

Ok, I guess it's time for me to get out of here. My son's already asked me several times why I'm on the computer (because he prefers my laptop to the pc) and not reading!

that's great to hear. Join Library thing, and some books you've read, and it will give you hundreds of recommendations based on the books in your library.

there are other sites which do similar things. but the recommendations from library thing are the best in my opinion. and their system is the most customizable.

I had to vote for "I honestly don't know" because at this point I have no clue how much I've read since I got my reader at the beginning of the year. I know it's more than I read last year! I was going through a batch of five or six every two week period when I was getting them from the library, and I know I read at least one book a week, now. These aren't "War and Peace" sized, though, they're mysteries...probably average 300 pages?

I read about a book every ten days and was honestly thinking that was a lot (compared to all people I know in real life). Apparently it's not. To be honest, I'm sort of relieved that there are a lot of bookworms who read far more books than me. I suddenly feel so "normal"

When I read in bed I usually lay on my side with the reader leaning against a pillow so the couple of times I've fallen asleep while reading, my reader has not fallen. Whew!

I've only fallen asleep with my PDA active a few times... But I generally put it underneath my pillow, unless I need to charge it.

Yes, it's rare that I fall asleep with my reader on my bed. I'm too paranoid I'll break it. It has happened, though. I put it next to my bed, on the table.

Well, I went back and did a book count. In the last year I have read 194 books ranging in size (using pbook count) from 300-1200 pages. Of these approx. 55 were re-reads. Keep in mind I am retired and read a little faster than most, in Jr. High school and high school, I averaged 22-27 books per week.
