Taken the plunge - ordered a 700
Well after a year of dithering I've finally ordered the 700.
I know it won't work on the Sony web site, ('cos I'm in the Uk,) but I'm not that bothered as I mainly want it for proof & beta reading documents. Am I right in thinking that if I copy the text out of a 'http' page and paste it into a word doc, I'll be able to transfer it striaght to the 700? I expect as soon as it arrives I'll be back with more questions/problems. lol |

I use book designer, check out the links in my sig.
other people use calibre to convert.. I don't like it. I think it nativly reads RTF. but I've never tried it. |

Thanks Andy, I looked at your link, it looks very involved. Gulp.
I'm useless at anything that requires a 'brain' with technical logic and computer skills. I thought I would be able to just copy the word docs to an SD card stick it in the reader and get reading. I may have made a big mistake in ordering this! |

Tarq, don't worry. Save those Word docs as RTF files (in Word, click FILE > SAVE AS > and change type to RICH TEXT FORMAT). If you're using a Windows computer, you can even just use WORDPAD (START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > WORDPAD) as it doesn't let you do anything that won't work when you save as RTF.
Bring on the questions! We can help. ![]() |

Congrats! The PRS-700 is definitely on my short list here in Canada (the Kindle isn't even a choice). Love the idea of an e-book reader that I can actually treat more like a book. For me, it'd be more about reading full-on novels and less short-form text.

I've had my Sony PRS-500 for a while which has held up nicely, its good to see that they make some quality products. I don't think you can go wrong with the 700. How is it with one handed reading? I always wondered whether you could read as well with one hand since you need to swipe.

I'm definitely not as knowledgeable as Andybaby, but for simpler URL page contents, I've had the best results using a screen-scrape of the html, copy into Word, optionally raise font size, Save as HTML, read that it into Calibre, convert and change the meta-data.
I've tried saving as .rtf, and was disappointed, but I didn't try it enough to remember why. I also tried BookIt, which is neat and painless on many occasions (an icon in Firefox, and boom, it works, scouring the site through the links to the levels you've specified, sorta like Plucker desktop if you've ever used that). But on other occasions, it didn't work so great, maybe I wasn't specifying recursion or levels well enough. E.g., a Python web tutorial was made into 6,000 pages with repetitive useless crap until page 4,700. |

Andybaby, that is exactly why I am now deciding between the soon to be released Pocket Pro and the PRS700. The ability to "turn" pages seems like it would make the ereader experience more like reading a real book.

while if I used something else+ calibre to edit books it would be a whole lot more trouble to get the same attention to detail. |

I should've used that on "The Da Vinci Code" and "The Appeal." Ah, too late, I've already read those stinkers.

I did 5 books last night in book designer, and it took only 2 minutes each book. and now they are all pretty. with tocs, and chapter links, and marked epigraphs, and text authors for the books that put quotes in the beginning of chapters (that you have to do manually) titles, subtitles, everything is done real nice. |

Thanks for all your thoughts guys. I'm now waiting, the co. rang me yesterday, they hope to dispatch today, & recon I should receive early next week. Bounce....can't wait.
Mklynds - I was waiting for 1st the 505 then the 700 to come to uk, but in the end gave up waiting for the 700 & after reading these forums, decided to take the plunge with the 700. There's limited choice here. |
