One SF setting I quite like is the Elizabeth Moon "Vatta" series. No central government, all independent systems and some loose alliances. There is one large fairly benign megacorporation controlling the FTL communications network.

This is a great topic and some fantastic universes have already been mentioned here -- Vinge, Herbert etc. SF has most of the best ones IMHO -- Ursula Le Guin's stories in her Hainish Universe are really interesting, and Scott Westerfield has a fabulous set-up going on in his Risen Empire series.
Fantasy doesn't tend to fare so well on the originality front, but recently, I blogged about some of my favourites in a post entitled, 100 imaginary places to see before you die. Julain May, China Miéville, Robert Holdstock and others feature. |

Greg Egan has some interesting concepts in his books. Very hard SF. He's not very well known in the US. He really excels at creating the physics of his universes.

Roger Zelazny wrote a multi-volume series called the Amber chronicles. It takes places in different dimensions where the laws of physics change. The characters slide from one dimension to another and find that guns don't fire because gunpowder does not ignite for example, because in that dimension the rouge in cosmetics is used in its place. Has anybody read this? I am asking because I find the last few volumes less interesting the the beginning volumes and wonder if others think so too.

She wrote some of my all time favorite science fiction. I loved her world building and characters. The Snow Queen won a Hugo award when it came out. (not that the Hugo automatically means the story is awesome for everyone) I also liked that she had strong interesting women protaganists. |

Which last volumes are you talking about? The series is a series of 5 books, followed by another series of 5. In my opinion the second series is not so good. I found it a fun read but it lacked the depth of the first. |

Really.. I'll have to give that a look. Very much like her Paksenarrion fantasy but never read anything of the Vatta series.

I have to also say that Otherland was a great series. I have no idea if it's in eBook format or not. But even if it's not, it's worth it to go paper with this one.

Nope, don't hold Scientology again Hubbard. Hold his lousy books against him. mission Earth is horrible and a real waste of time to read. It's endless boredom that you will wish you had your life back that you wasted trying to read that dreck. Lets just say your life will be better off for never having read this mess.

I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned Jeffrey Carver's "Starrigger Universe!" - it's certainly on my favourites list, along with Cherryh's "Compact Space", E E 'Doc' Smith's "Lensman Universe", and quite a few others.
I think that I've probably re-read the books of the Lensman series and the Compact Space universe (specifically the Chanur books) more often than most of the others. Snowman |
