So, why you don't try getting a refurbished PRS-505? That should hopefully work and seems like a lot of other people have done that too.
Hmm. Maybe someone should start a thread: how I broke my Reader...

It would be kind of like those columns in the newspaper where people write in about how they have messed up their love lives. You read it for the schadenfreude.

That's a good warranty if it covers drops & accidents! The Kindle 2 warranty does not seem to do so, unless you buy the extended warranty - which usually isn't worthwhile.

Just for the record, since most people buy these devices with a credit card, you should always check to see whether you have an extended warranty or other protection under the terms of the card.

Not wishing to sound negative, I really wouldn't count on it being a warranty repair. Broken screen substrates (which yours definitively is, from the picture) are normally not covered by warranty. I think you may well find that, when Sony receive it, they'll contact you and tell you that it's not covered by the warranty.

I'd been worried about that--tracked the shipment, waited a few days, waited a few more, got ready to contact them and ask what the damage would be (because if they wanted $200 to fix it, I might decide to just take that one back, unfixed 'cos it's embossed, and eventually get a new one, or switch to a Jetbook).

It's fixed. It's being shipped now. I just needed to pay the $29 labor fee; the year's warranty on the original purchase covered the parts.

I'm ECSTATIC. I really didn't expect this to be covered. (I wonder if it matters that I bought it from the Sonystyle store, not from a third-party vendor?)

Will be pestering husband to design me some kind of case with a lanyard; I want something with a wrist-strap so I don't drop it again.

Just not too tight or you'll crack the case and maybe the screen.

I'm delighted (but surprised!) to hear that it was repaired under warranty. Good for you!
