They really aren't the best because you have to scroll so much and changing the display to make it easier to read, i.e., on it's side, just makes it awkward to hold.

There are a few downsides.

First the smaller screen does take a little getting used to, and if you multitask a lot, its probably not the best option.

Performance wise, its so-so, but how much of it is due to the slower processor and how much is due to the OS still has to be seen, and once I get some time to install Windows 7 on it, will see. Still, It is usable, though if you have more then a few apps open at the same time, it can and does freeze up a bit.

To keep it nice and slim, Sony has moved the VGA out and Ethernet jack to a separate Dongle which they to their credit have included in the box. Still it is one more thing you have to keep track off, and if you have to use it often can be a bit tiresome.

Only 2 USB Ports and no analog Mike in, though there is a built in mike. Still if you plan to use a head set, better get a USB one.

Overall, its a really nice machine, though you really pay a premium for the Small size and low weight.

It worked out to £700 for the machine and another £40 for the carry case (The official Sony one was £100!!!!!!)

That's a little over double the price of the 1000HE, but still below other ultra-portable notebooks such as Sont Tz, Toshiba Portege, etc.
Wow, that's quite the expensive netbook. I really hope that netbook satisfies her needs.

As you've acknowledged, it's double the price of a 1000HE, however it is indeed smaller and low weight. But DOUBLE THE PRICE!!! And, it still has several shortcomings that you've outlined. I'd rather the 3G dongle than the ethernet/VGA one but i guess that's personal preference.

For me, a netbook is intended to fill a gap with already having another "main" computer. I would find it very hard to spend $1K on a netbook to fill that gap with some of the inherent limitations that having a netbook has. But I guess if a netbook is your main computer, perhaps the expenditure is worthwhile.

Making that her primary PC was one of the primary reasons we felt that the price was worth it. So While we ended up getting a netbook, it was more of a replacement for a ultra portable Laptop.

While she does have larger 15" Notebook, its too big and heavy (3.5KG) for her to lug around, and as she moves quiet regularly between 4 countries, it really makes sense for her to have a thin and light notebook.

The one she was using previously was an older Sony Viao TX ultra portable which cost $3000 when My dad bought it a few years ago, but it finally conked out recently, having survived 6 years of abuse and a war.

So compared to what one of the other ultra portable laptops cost £900-£1500 up, the price is not so bad.

As for the dongle, the same issue of travel comes up. Getting dongles for each place is tedious, and unlocked Dongles while available, are pretty expensive costing between £100-£200 so the built in 3G does provide some decent value.

As such, it really comes down to what the needs and usage scenario are, and while I personally could never survive with just a netbook as my only PC, For Her it makes sense, and she's really getting used to it, and enjoying the heck out of it.

At the end of the day, that's what really matters. I suppose I would feel the same way if I traveled between continents/countries frequently and had a strong reliance on the 3G network.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you to All4Fun for the link to the EeeUser forums which has been very helpful.

Going to try a little overclocking today. Wish me luck.
I'm glad your experiences with the 1000HE are working out well. Let us know how the experience is like with Windows 7 RC1. I'm a little tentative of "tainting" my netbook with an OS that has a limited lifespan (it will expire forcing a reinstall of the retail OS once available).

I don't see where I could give a bad review, after hearing the real computer people here rave about it.

Any problems would be caused by my own lack of knowledge.....

This will be the first time I've attempted anything like replacing the ram. They've made it so easy, I feel like I could even replace the hard drive.

But I'm not going to.......nor am I going to do anything like Daffy.

I'll bring in firefox, and thats it.

So far so good. I've stuck with XP for work because one piece of equipment I use does not work with Vista. It does work with Windows 7, which makes me very happy. I'm tired of having multiple OSes (3 now) and hope to bring all of my computers together with just one if Win7 continues to behave.

I do think you want to follow the suggestions on this wiki page on how to get FireFox to give you the most screen space possible for such a small screened device.
