Presumably at the start of the next week it gets sent to my home )

Using Flite On The SmartQ 7

As a complete Linux newbie, I'm pleased to report that I successfully installed Flite on my SmartQ 7 today.

I installed libflite1_1.2-release-2.2build1_arm.deb first and then flite_1.2-release-2.2build1_arm.deb using the GDebi Package Installer.

After installation, I was able to get Flite to speak using commands issued from the Run dialog box.

The commands take the classic form of:

flite -t "Insert your text here"

This is good for a quick test but multiple sentences require the use of a file.

Flite can read a file when the given the command:

flite -f filename

Of course, you must tell Flite where your file is stored so your actual command may look something like:

flite -f /home/user/filename

Files can be created using Leafpad but they should be saved with Character Coding set to UTF-8 with CR+LF.

Also, it seems that every string of text to be spoken must be followed by a carriage return.

Experiment with it at your own risk and see how you like the robotic voice.

I'm getting excited! I just checked my tracking number and my package is in Melbourne and cleared customs, scheduled for delivery. Only got my tracking number on Friday and since today is a public holiday here I wasn't expecting an update on it.

I wonder if I could get it tomorrow! Fingers crossed!

Device: SmartQ 7
Hello,

I'm new here but I've been reading all over the web about the SmartQ 5/7. I'm highly interested in the SmartQ 7 device but I'm still hesitating.
I'm looking for a device for the following uses (readers of maemo talk zone might remember this):

- Browsing the internet at reasonable speed, mainly reading emails, news websites, boards and youtube...

- Typing text during lectures (I'm a student) - using a external keyboard obviously here. Being able to use OpenOffice would be great.

- Emulate Games (up to SNES and MegaDrive generation is enough...DosBox and/or ScummVM too).

- Good experience for watching videos, in terms of speed and possibility to read wide range of formats. SmartQ 5 already have Mer running on them; did it improve the video reading experience ?

- Decent mp3 player

- Installation of a linux-based OS

I'm also wondering how much will it cost to ship to Belgium, Europe. Can someone in a near country could tell how much he spent for the thing, all charges included ?

Finally, and because there are people here and elsewhere asking for it, I'm working on a board dedicated to the SmartQ 5/7. It will be up by the end of the week. If it works, and if I do buy a SmartQ 7, I guess it could grow into a website during the summer. You tell me if it's a good idea...

Thanks !

Hey all,

My Q7 arrived today -- didn't get an email, nor a tracking number (I'm in Thailand.) But it arrived a day before they told me that they would be shipping it! So no complaints with Eletroworld. VAT was around $20-22 US (728 baht with all fees). They valued it at 4000 baht ($120 or so.)

At first I thought the thing was screwy -- had bad calibration, couldn't get it to come back from sleep, etc. I thought I was doomed!

Finally got it to reboot, and all is well.

It's just lovely. Wishing it had as many keys as my Nokia 770, but I haven't done any customizing yet, except playing with little OpenBox config stuff, lxpanel stuff, etc.

It is slow -- there are significant delays between taps and when the interface shows reaction (checkboxes, dropdowns etc.) I'm assuming that this can be made to go away with a better OS. I'll probably be trying Mer soon -- as soon as I'm sure that there's good wireless, mplayer and fbreader support. Not too big a hurdle, actually.

Certainly haven't tried movies, or the like yet. Gotta get the repositories connected, and look for better stuff.

Gonna play with xrandr, and matchbox. And GPE. (xrandr is onboard already.)

But it's lovely to hold and look at. If it's configured to 480x800, it might be more usable...

Mine cleared customs yesterday at 5:30 am. I guess there is a slight chance that I get it today, more likely tomorrow. I hate waiting.

Browser--Midori is fine for basic web tasks like Gmail and reading the news but it doesn't support Flash.

Typing--I've used a Fellowes Stowaway Keyboard and a Logitech Internet 350 Keyboard as well as a Kensington Orbit Optical mouse (Model 64327) with the Q7.

It should work with a variety of Bluetooth peripherals (keyboard, mouse, GPS, etc.).

The Q7 definitely benefits from both a keyboard and mouse when trying to do anything beyond the basics.

OpenOffice is not installed (perhaps due to performance and/or storage limitations) but the Q7 comes with Abiword as well as Leafpad.

The button layout wouldnt be very good for this, you would prolly have to use a gamepad or keyboard, but Ive run SNES roms on less, so I dont see why not.

Cool Got a 23GB HCSD card coming too now. Thanks for the heads up. The wife was making fun of me too because it took me like 45 minutes to win one of the auctions. And then I won 2. I really was trying to push the envelope on price thought $20.50 and $19.50 was what I ended up. It was like bidding on comodities. It was killing me, the bids were like crazy in the last 20 seconds...

My Q7 arrived today. The 7 inch screen is great. The overall look and feel is very nice. The fonts selected for the english language implementation are very strange. There are much better choices included on the device . Internet speed is better than my Nokia 810. My initial impression is this will definitely be replacing my Nokia , Will wait and see how reading on it compares to the Sony 505 and Kindle. If anyone figures out how to flash the newest Ubuntu to the Q7, I would like to try it. What repositories are available for the Q7 with the version of Ubuntu it has on it?

Congratulations on your new Q7!

I followed Chippy's lead on the Q7 and used the Hasty ARM 5 repository at handhelds.org to get Flite to install.

I'm not an experienced Linux user so I defer to anyone who may have greater knowledge but this is at least a place to start.

This concerned me, too, and I found the following statement on the e World site today:

"The Smartdevices official announced that they have bought Microsoft Windows CE 6.0 official copyright. Before the end of June they would release version of WinCE system for the user to choose. This shows that the MID devices will have double operation system. It also will be attached to well-known software development group of LBE: Fantasy Desktop, TCPMP and Games Assistants."

Wow! Ubuntu, Mer, Android, and WinCE available for the SmartQ. We're really lucky to have so much from which to choose!
