A group of guys go to lunch, each one overpays, the waitperson get a fat tip.

A group of ladies go to lunch, everyone breaks out the calculator to make certain they don't overpay a penny.

I voted for "whoever asks pays" for the first date. And maybe some after that... but once the relationship is settled there should be a discussion, unless one has money to spare.


But since we're both poor college students it works out that we just take turns, with me doing it a bit more because I do have a bit more cash than she does.

Unless it's me and my girlfriends in which case the server gets a fat tip. We also don't expect guys to pay our way. If it's a special occasion, like my birthday, I might feel put out if my date didn't pay. I'd certainly treat him somewhere nice on his birthday. In general, I like to take turns paying. I don't want to interrupt good conversation to figure out the split. Generally what goes around comes around. No need to get all exercised about a few dollars.

Who ever asks for the date pays. If a guy asks a girl he likes out on a date but hasn't got a wallet full of cash, he has to get creative. I've had some great dates where I had to make do on a $20 dollar bill. Plus the fun, creative and yes, cheap dates often have the best endings to them....

A lot of people are saying...whoever asks....but what if it is like the 10th date and you are a couple by then...thus it is more of a dynamic situation in which no one is really the invitee or invited. In that case...i guess u must all think they should split it evenly?

That's a good point, but I see it as a totally different situation. What you asked is about how to manage a relationship.

If there's a relationship, there is no dating although the couple may go out. Couples don't "date," although they may go out and call it one. While you're dating, you're getting to know the person and deciding whether you want a relationship.
