I've just finished reading a paperback copy of Without Warning by John Birmingham. If it wasn't for the fact that I liked the story I'd have thrown it in the bin after a few pages. It was heavy, awkward to hold at the right angle and impossible to read lying down in bed.
I only bought the paper version because, not being in the USA, I couldnt buy an e version. I think there are books I just won't read in future if I can't get an e copy. There are so many books available that some authors and publishers are going to miss out on my money, regardless of the quality of their books, if they won't sell me an e version for my HanLin.

Wouldn't it be funny if they suddenly became valuable (monetary wise) and those of us who had closets full became rich, and those who 'pooh-pooh'ed' them, refusing to have them about, didn't?

i had that experience about a month after i started reading ebooks. now, recently, i've had a book i didn't even manage to finish at all, because physically it was so uncomfortable, despite that i really did want to read it ! i still plan to keep many of my paper books forever but i'm trying not to buy any more and i start to wonder whether i'm only keeping them out of nostalgia... maybe i won't ever read them at all now !

I just put 5 pbooks up for sale on eBay. I bought them just before I purchased by Kindle and I've never read them and never will (in paper form). I still have one pbook I bought at the same time that I'll try to read someday (unless the Kindle price gets really low).

heh, i also bought several paper books shortly before i got my liseuse... and i still haven't read them. i started one of them : an omnibus of 3 Inspector Mayo novels by Marjorie Eccles. somewhat oversized, quite thick and heavy... i like the stories, but i only managed to read the first one so far... now i keep looking for them as ebooks instead (not available so far ). it would annoy me a bit to purchase them twice but since i bought the paper one on ebay it wasn't too expensive... and something tells me there is not much point keeping that paper one around...

I'll second that, I scanned a standard paperback book once. It took a long time, and it was actually physically hard work because bending over the scanner for so long really puts a strain on your back (and I was only about 20 at the time)

Put it this way, I scanned a book from my childhood that I really love. It's from a series of 14, and to this day, over a decade later, I have not scanned any of the others....

The sweet scent of deaded tree, sliced into thin layers of rough sheet and darkend with black ink... into a heavy pile of inconventient pbook.

Shall they burn and provide our eBook Readers with power so we can read in bed

ARRGGHH! That scared me!
Burning pbooks? Never!!! I can agree, for environmental reasons (even though some arguments against the matter also exist) to stop the production of all new pbooks, but burning them? Never! I'd throw myself on the stake to be burned with the books!

Gotta love the evil smiley though!

It's the small print that gets to me when I try to read a pbook. I have a pile of pbooks that aren't available in ebook form, and they will probably slowly get tossed as I realize I'm never going to re-read them.

I'm about to scan a > $200 reference book I have, just so that I can have it on my Reader. I figure I'll have a PDF I can read in a pinch. And I have an assistant who'll be happy to be paid at an hourly rate to do the scanning, saving my elderly back.

Oh I much prefer ebooks now. I didn't realize how bad my eyesight was until I got my 505. the ability to make the font bigger is one of my favorite features. I still have around 300 pb books, most of which I haven't read. So my change over to ebooks is gradual....BUT....I have found a few ebooks at the library that I already have in PB form, and I have decided I will read the ebooks anyway. I belong to paperbackswap.com, so it's pretty easy for me to get rid of books.

I have talked to alot of people who aren't ready for ebook readers though. They said they liked the feel of the book in their hands. Which I can understand. Someday they'll change their mind I'm sure. I do alot of reading in bed, and the ebook reader is ALOT easier to deal with.
