Just stock up on dust masks and antihistamines first - you'll be fine!

This would probably cut the number of visitors you get as well, so that'll make your life even easier because they won't be bringing dirt into the house

Reminds me of something my dad said to my mom after 20 years of marriage when she asked for a dishwasher. His reply was that we already have seven. I have six siblings.

(They got divorced over 30 years ago, and he died in 1986 so he didn't say that recently!)

I also remember my dad teaching me how to peel potatoes. He explained that his technique was the best because "it takes so long that if you do it like that mum won't ask you to do it again." When my sister was born, my brother and I (then aged 10 and 12) tried to explain to him how to cook a roast dinner. In the end we did it with him taking the hot pans out of the oven when we told him to!

my grandfather was very active around the house, there was a division of labour between him and my grandmother but it wasn't very well defined ; he did some of the cooking and cleaning but she did most of that, they both did a lot of gardening, and he did the repairs and maintenance. he knew how to do *everything*, from making his own wine to resoling his own shoes, and including things like putting in a new wood floor, doing tile, even electricity. it's probably because of him that despite my best efforts i have trouble respecting a man who doesn't know how to "do it yourself".

excellent point ! cuts down on dishes as well !! i'd rather go out to see my friends anyway, i spend enough time here as it is !

hm, that is a bit problematic, then again the chances of me ever winding up in any sort of relationship with stephen fry are slim at best i would think so i can just ignore that shortcoming in him... (although, if stephen fry *did* want to come over and put up shelves for me, i wouldn't refuse !)

You can learn to do that yourself, there are more women learning carpentry than guys.
If a man can do it, a woman can do it better...

tch. i already KNOW how to do that, what do you take me for ? i've put up more shelves around here than i can remember. also changed the shower flexible, wired a lamp, added an extra switch to a different lamp, partially built my own computer, and most recently redid the putty on a certain window (okay, not very well. but still). also, i have my own power drill, my own saw, and many mechanical tools including a hammer and a full set of screwdrivers, and a multi-position wrench. just because i CAN do it, it doesn't mean i ENJOY doing it.

PS Use him fer what he does best.
